.45-70 Range report.
« on: November 17, 2009, 11:01:02 AM »
I have a Handi in this wonderful caliber, 22 inch barrel, pallet wood.

Using Hodgen's Univeral Clays under a 365 grain cast bullet (benched) I got an inch and an eighth three shot group at 100 yards.  These loads were using a Remington large pistol primer.  Just about 1320 fps.  Amazing to watch the chronograph.  1320,1321,1320,1320,1324 and so on.  Sheessshh.

I also used the same load with a Lyman 462650 that I cut the gas check off of the mould.  The bullet weighs 510 grains, and ran 1110,1110,1110,1109,1110 fps.  All five shots into about an inch at 50 yards.

I can see that you guys aren't kidding when you say that this caliber in the Handi tends to shoot well!  These rifles sure grow on you.

What's the mold and maker on that 365 gr?
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

It's a Lee custom group buy we did about three years ago on the CastBoolits forum.  Nice flat, good crimping groove.  With 50/50 wheel weights/pure lead it drops from the mould at.462, nice and fat.  My bore is .4575 and I size to .459.

I've always been told some calibers are inherently more accurate than others and the 45 is certainly one of them.  So far as Handi 45-70's go, everyone I know had a shooter right out of the box no matter what they used. Yours is obviously no exception.

The UC load sounds like it would be pretty enjoyable to shoot.
