.223 Ultra does me proud
« on: November 16, 2009, 06:31:04 AM »
I bought a .223 Ultra Varmint with the laminate montecarlo stock about 6 months ago because I grew up shooting a Topper 20 ga. and really like the simple platform.  I found GBO shortly after because I was looking for some tips on these rifles and I've got to say that the handi 101 and help sticky that has been compiled are really great.  I was lucky in that my rifle had a fairly decent trigger and the forearm had a good fit right out of the box so the only thing I had to do was break in the barrel and come up with an accurate load.  Needless to say I found it.  The group in the picture is three shots fired at 200 yards from sand bags.  It measured just about exactly 1".  The load is a 69 grain Sierra Match King, a near max charge of RL 15, Rem. brass, and Federal SR match primer.  I couldn't be happier with this little rifle.

For 200 yds I'd call that more than awesome.

And I though it was tack driver accuracy from one of those new TH stocks.  :)

It is a KEEPER.  Nice shooting too.

Dang, that is good shooting.  I'd be happy getting that group at 100 yards.

Jake was your last shot the high one?
Looks like you are cutting holes with the first too, a most excellent load and shooting, That 223 will serve you very well.

The last shot was the high one.  That's the typical shape I usually get for a group from this rifle, two nice and tight and the third just a bit high and to the right.  I can't complain though, this thing just seems to keep shooting better all the time.  My best previous groups were about this size from the 100 yd. bench, I actually took it to the 200 yard bench just to check my zero before going out coyote hunting.

Maybe the third shot is flying because of the barrel getting hot.  Were the shots made close together?  Just a thought.

Reminds me of the time I tried to shoot a 1" explosive target at 200 yards with my ultra barrel (1 in 12).
Shot #1, just missed it at 3 o'clock.
Shot #2 I aimed at 9:00, and it went exactly where I aimed it.
Shot #3 I aimed dead center and it was touching the first shot.
If I'd aimed all three in the same place, I would have had a 5/8-3/4" group with two shots touching. That was with Winchester white box 45gr, fired off Caldwell Deadshot bags full of white beans.

BTW, if you fill your sand bags with grain or beans, don't leave them out in the car trunk, or the mice will chew into them.

OP, I assume your rifle is 1 in 9" twist? I can't imagine shooting 69gr Sierras in mine.

Jack, the shots were in pretty rapid succession, less than a minute apart, and I had already shot a group of fowlers so I would imagine you're right.  Mitch, it's a 2007 model with 1:9 twist.  It seems to really like the heavier bullets, although it does ok with 55 grain stuff as well.  I haven't tried any of the lighter bullets yet, the heavy ones do a little better in the Wyoming wind so I started there.
