.223 bull barreled 1-12" question
« on: November 15, 2009, 08:21:27 AM »
I have an SB2 ultra, and was wondering if your guy's rifles prefer clean barrels, or glazed barrels for accuracy?

I've been debating my cleaning habits, wondering if I'm wasting time and materials scrubbing bores only to take it back out and do it all over again.

H&Rs generally shoot best from dirty bores, at least to the point of accuracy deterioration which all depends on how well the bore is broken in, that's one reason why most take a little range time before you achieve best accuracy unless you polish the bore ahead of time, but not always.   My 1:12" 223 Ultra Varmint took about 80 rounds of Win White box 45gr JHP(Walmart value pack) before it shot under 1" after polishing the bore with Flitz on a patched jag per the FAQs.

My Ultra Varmint .223rem prefers a dirty bore by a slight margin.  For yotes, groundhogs, and crows the consistency change is so little that none of them notice.   lol

Mine seem's to like dirty..I clean it real nice, scrub for copper deposit, oil it,,then dry well before shooting with denatured alchohol swabs,,but then it takes about 8-10 rounds before it dials into moa again.
I got mine used,,unknown round count,, took about 150 rnds of various bullet weights before I found it likes 40grn v-max and/or 40grn Nosler partition types at around 3000-3200 fps,,there isn't a dealer within 60 miles that has WWB, so darn it,,I've been forced to buy loading equipment, now maybe I can step up in weight a bit and tune the loads for it.
