Keeping truck guns nice?
« on: November 12, 2009, 02:54:51 PM »
My truck gun is actually a minivan gun. If you don't have a minivan, you probably never knew that they have a ridiculous # of compartments for toys, diapers and now.....a truck gun. It happens to have been untouched for 6+ months. The barrel has gotten rusty. So what do you folks do to keep them nice.

Heep a coat of oil or metal protectant on the metal.
I use a cheep rifle for a truck gun, not a pre 64 Winchester!

Treit,

There are a number of good finishes out there that can be done at home , That tend to handle storage without rust far better then traditional blueing ... If it is a SB1 that you are reffering to like the one my 44 mag wears the blueing on it is a joke and very prone to rusting ( though most blueing doesnt stand up as well as some of the modern coatings out there) .. I'll be doing a Brownells  http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=26563/Product/CERAKOTE_trade__CERAMIC_COATINGS
Or maybe the Pakerizing that they offer on my 44 mag H&R and possible my 444S Marlin, I dont think the moly finishes would do to bad either ...

Just an idea for you brother,

It gets cold and draws moisture to itself all the time. Combination of good oiling, try boeshield spray, keeping moisture at bay in the comparment, try a big ol dessicant bag, and possibly insulating the compartment from fast temp swings.

Get an old gun, hopefully stainless, treat it as above. Get it out of the tray a lot more often. Nice will be hard because of vibration removing the finish so settle for combat ready.

I keep a heavy coat of Armorall protectant on my guns and many of them though 10 plus years old look very nice and my guns get around.

Wrap it in a silicone impregnated cloth, or gun sock.

A water proof zip up case with dry packs inside. Soft lined cheap plastic worked for my pop for many years wired behind his pickup seat. Real dusty there.

Well I hate to state the obvious, but the best way is to not leave it untouched for that long a time to begin with.

0000 steel wool and some oil will help remove surface rust from the outside, hope there isn't any in the bore, that can be tedious work to bring it back to being a good shooter.

I guess when I lived out west I kept a .22 mag behind the seat, in a cloth sock, but I was always checking that thing. Just to be sure the wife or kids didn't toss something onit and/or making sure it was still there! I'd go shoot tin cans with it every couple weeks to make sure the sights were still on. For me guns are a tool, and like any tool I want it clean and in good shape when I need it.

Now if it's an ole shotgun, like we keep a "barn gun" in these parts for stray critters an such, I wouldn't worry, I just put a drop or two of oil in the parts that need it every couple months, maybe drop the hammer every now and then to make sure the firing pin still works,,,,,,,Good luck.

Use a good corrosion protectant and you won't have to worry about it, I bet you can tell what I use from one look at the 11 week test pic below.  ;)

Had a similar problem with a Scatter gun I kept under the back seat of the Cherokee.
It rusted, so I cleaned it and painted it, and sprayed Wax on it.  Still rusted.
So I repainted, waxed and vacume sealed it.  With some ammo.  Tossed in a few desicant packets that came with a pair of shoes or something from Cabellas.
The cars Trucks get hot during the day and cold at night and the gun will get condinsation on in the containers in the car, it no matter what you do to it with paint, oil or wax.  The heat melts off the wax or oil over time.
The roll of Plastic can be trimmed to what you need.
I would take the gun out.
Remove all rust, disassemble and paint.  Let it dry for a day and toss parts in the oven at 200 degrees for 1/2 an hour.
Let cool and reassemble.  Now vaccume seal how you store it.  You can use a cardboard back to hide it. Toss other items on the other side like power bars, small 1st aid kit, or other items to camo it.  If needed use your pocket knife to open and load.

Eezox dries to a film in a day or so that won't wash off, that's one of the nice things about it, it doesn't attract dust either.  ;)

For a blued gun the cheapest and easiest I have found is a good coat of black Kiwi boot polish or paste floor wax. Rub it on, let it dry, buff it out and you're done.

i have always kept a scatter gun in my tractor until recently.
i upgraded to a 45/410 handi. been in there for about a month now
and we have had temp swings from 85- 40F, 50-100% humidity
no rust!!! and my old savage 1-hole never rusted either after many
years or service. i use a product called united-139, dry spray lubricant.
spray on and wipe it all around then spray a final coat.
my tractor has a conditioned cab like a vehicle. and is locked up in the barn
when not using. the dry lube never goes away... but it does collect dust!!!
oh-well, at least it don't rust........ ;D
i do maintain and operate the "truck-gun" from time to time ;)

Tim-

Thanks for that link - good info.  I have been using "Barricade" with excellent results.  To me, it seemed to offer longer lasting protection the Break Free, though it does leave more of a film on the metal.

Larry,

I've read other praises of BC Barricade, but I haven't seen any comparative tests done. Breakfree CLP is a good one because it's available just about everywhere from supermarkets to hardware and automotive supply shops.  Ballistol is another good one that faired well in extended tests, but like Eezox, isn't readily available except online.

Turtle wax or Johnson's paste wax on everything external works for me.  Of course, I seldom leave a gun in the truck for long before using it on something, even if it's only a tin can along the road...

I think the real question is how to have a 4WD MiniVan?... now were talking 8)
Sorry I couldn't help myself. If they were built up and tougher as a 4WD, a MiniVan would be just about the most versitile vehicle around, they do have a crap load of pockets, and compartments don't they?
