No surprise the 45-70 being at the top but I am surprised that the 357 isn't higher on the list. Come to think of it I would have guessed the 30-30 would be closer to the top too.

Spanky, that is exactly what I was thinking.  I woulda thought the .357 Mag/Max 'd be up there as well as the .30-30.  If ya delete the shotguns, it improves somewhat.  That's comparing apples and oranges.

A lot of people buy the smaller gauges and calibers for women and youth.  I did, and I have family members who did.  Most average people who do not reload do not know you can make a 357 max out of a 357, so they buy the 30-30.  I figured the 243 would be in the top 10 because of youth's first deer gun, but I guess the 30-30 was it.  Single shots for youth is good, because it makes them count and not spray a semi-auto, or lever.  Safer gun to start with.

Where is the 30-06 and the 308?

I can't believe these two aren't in the top ten.

I can't believe any rimless cartridge would place in the top 5.

The .500 surprises me as well.  The 45-70 was no surprise at all.  No telling how many were sold in Mississippi alone when MDWFP made it legal for primitive weapons season.  Now, Louisiana has followed in our footsteps, to a degree.  Even before that, it was gaining popularity.

If you take out the shot guns what are the top ten rifle chambering?
Also interesting that the top ten is 58.2% of all replys on How many handis here.

This is a neat topic for me as I would never give any thought to owning a single shot rifle in anything but a large caliber rimmed case IE 45/70 and up or any rimmed case I guess I am old school ;D Note I said rimmed case they go hand in hand so a 30/30 is still fine with me plus I have seen yotes busted at 300yds with one using 130 gr hollow pionts and a hefty load of 748.
But I can't help it I don't like the idea of shooting say a 280 Rem out of one, just the way I am.

Grampa Mike.

You left out my 257 Roberts  :'(Too bad how sad! It's the only one on this forum. I am going to take it hunting tomorow.

I fixed that gap again with that Goop Super Weld the stuff Tim send me. tried a 0.005" shim but when I started to hone it, it was very close to being a tight fit the shim came lose, so I tried the Super Weld  so far so good.

How long it will last? But it is very hard at 34000psi. The back thrust is quite a bit less. This stuff is very easy to use. My Devcon Steel Putty works about the same and lasts for 150 rounds.

This 0.005" gap has been a pain alright.

The .257 is the best of the .257 guns but too me it has to be fed through a mauser bolt gun. I have a older Ruger in .257 Roberts AI and would not worry about it puting down a Elk with NP 120 grain bullets, yet when Elk hunting the only rifle I carry is a BRNO 602 in .375 I am a bit of hiporcrate, I know spelled it wrong.Yes the mod 77 took a bit of work to get to the way I like a gun to to be but what a gun for a .25 cal much better than a 6mm, yet my 6mm stopped a bull moose with one shot when my brother had it lol. Just goes to show you can kill anything that walks with a center fire over .24 if you put the bullet in the right place.Oh my 6mm is a 788 best Gun remington ever made

Austin 1.
Well I have two of the 257 Roberts neither is is a Mauser bolt gun. I shot a lot of deer with the 257 Handi a couple of years ago I droped a Bull Moose in his tracks. The handi makes a fine 257 Roberts. The only trouble with it is the soft steel in the under lug.

The other 257 Roberts is a Ruger #1 a fine rifle and super acurate like the Handi. It seems though the 257 Handi gets perferential use when the gap is fixed up. I have quite a collection of Ruger#1 and my first doe I toke with a 7x57 #1 last week Nov 5.

On the 4th I toke a shot at a doe late pm with my new 6.5x284 Ruger #1 and missed. She was standing in high grass with only the head visible. A clean miss? That shot ended the bad luck day
starting with a dead Jeep at day break. More than 1/2 the opening day was used to find an electrical problem.

neither the 45/70 or the .223 surprises me as being popular.

i've never had a 45/70 but may some day.

i currenly have the .223 ultra varmint and have had various other .223/5.56 rifles in the past; a great all around varmint cartridge.

This is a hard survey to do. Especially due to only those that have posted. It is interesting though, but there are so many that haven't logged in and contributed... I am sure such offerings as  the 22 Hornet, 204, 25-06, 30-06 and 270..etc are very consistent solid sellers. And many more than we know/ or they know of "US" ;D, that have these excellent cals in a Handi that haven't spoken or known of GBO...

The venerable 30-06 is not so popular - but, what goes around, comes around.

I have my eye on a SS 30/06 so one more may be added to the count. ;)

Most people I know buy an H&R for their kids first rifle or shotgun, thus the popularity of the calibers 2-6.  Same with the shotgun, most people buy the 20 gauge for their kids or wife.  Just my opinion.  I bought one of my sons a Rossi combo in a 20ga 22lR for him to learn to shoot.

I am not surprised about the 45-70 being on top.  But I am surprised that the 30-06 did not place higher.  But then again few people that I know will buy a Handi.  They all buy Remingtons, Brownings, or Weatherbys.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
