Legality question
« on: November 04, 2009, 11:06:35 AM »
It is my understanding that I can legally use my 21", .22LR barrel with a G2 handgun frame and handgun grip in Indiana.

I have not been able to find anything which states a maximum length for a handgun barrel.

I've asked the same question myself.  I think you're okay with that.

If that was a shotgun, it would be perfectly legal since it would be at least 26in in total length.

So why not a CF or rimfire rifle?

Something you could also do is put a Choate side-folder on it, only using the pistol grip function!  But also having the f-stock for extra stability if it was ever wanted, too.

But if you indeed put a folding stock on an Encore or Contender frame, any bbl less than 16in would then be illegal.

Under Federal law, there is no max length for any type of common weapon.
It would be odd if any state did impose such a requirement.
As long as you never put a buttstock on your pistol frame, you can use any barrel size and be legal.

I would need to dig through my files, but in Indiana a handgun could not exceed overall length of 26 inches. Went through this years ago when handguns were allowed for hunting in Indiana. The old style contender with a 21 inch barrel meet the requirements. Good idea to have documentation when hunting as some of the officals were unclear about the use of a handgun in that configuration. I will dig through my files and post a follow up with the information.

Yes, that is my understanding as well.  The 21" barrel does not make the G2 exceed the 26" overall length.  The Indiana rules are a little bit fuzzy, to me, on the 26" issue but it looked to me that a handgun of less than 26" overall length would be legal.   I will keep an eye out for your follow up.

Thank you!

Ok here is a link to an Indiana governement resource.
http://www.in.gov/isp/files/firearms_FAQ_02_08.pdf
What is the legal definition of a handgun under Indiana Law?
IC 35-47-1-6 "Handgun"
35-47-1-6 Sec. 6. "Handgun" means any firearm:
(1) designed or adapted so as to be aimed and fired from one (1) hand, regardless
of barrel length; or
(2) any firearm with:

(A) a barrel less than sixteen (16) inches in length; or
(B) an overall length of less than twenty-six (26) inches.

You might can call a local PD and ask if both requirements need to be met.

From the Indiana State Law Title 35 Article 47.
35-47-1-6 Handgun - "Handgun"  means any firearm:
(1) designed or adapted so as to be aimed and fired from one hand, regardless of barrel length; or
(2) any firearm with:
(A)  a barrel less then (16) in length; or
(B) an overall lenght of less than twenty-six inches.

Hope this helps...
