Dumb handi question

I traded for a used handi in 223.  Seems accurate eneogh but the group changes point of impact on me.  It seems like its in the closing of the action, could this closing overcome the mechanical limits of my cheap scope.  The scope is a simmons pro hunter 6x18.  I have used it on a number of guns and it lives at my house as a floater scope to try out new guns until I find the scope I want.  It has never given me a lick of problems in the past and has been on rifles and fielded for a year or so before it goes back to its floater status.  I have never believed in hollywooding a single shut and close it as easily as I can but this is my first handi so I may be doing something wrong.  Thanks, SN

Thanks Tim,  I felt I had read and followed them to start out with but maybe I am not real handi at the application of the rules, no pun intended.  Guess I can try again.

Well, from your description of how you close the action, following #2 should improve accuracy.   ;) How you operate the trigger, making sure there's no oil or solvent on the latch or shelf and where you place the front rest ALL can make a big difference. After those hurdles have been crossed, try shooting it without the forend, that will tell you if the forend is the culprit, see forend fit in the FAQs for help on that issue.

Maybe in my effort not to slam the action I am screwing up.  I push down from the top and let the latch bypass and lock with a clunk.  I have been pretty careful on the latch as far as oils,  and try and let the trigger follow thru to the rear.  What was weird was it would print a three shot then the next would re loacate the group a couple inches from the first.   Bags were at the hinge point.  Maybe its fore arm as it was several groups not allowing for cooling. I will remove it and shoot some groups.   The gun does not have to shoot groups but needs to be spot on for my wood cutting truck gun.  Seems like while driving across my land or cutting wood I see coyotes.  Thanks for your insight, I will play some more after deer season.   SN
