Poll

Which to get? The .44 Mag or .357 Mag Handi? I have narrowed it down to these 2.

.44 Mag Handi
.357 Mag Handi

POLL: What to get?
« on: November 02, 2009, 02:13:25 PM »
Looking to get one of these during Christmas time! Please Help me decide which to get?!?
When an Army captain asked him for the direction of the line of retreat, Col Puller called his Tank Commander, gave them the Army position, and ordered: "If they start to pull back from that line, even one foot, I want you to open fire on them."
Turning to the captain, he replied "Does that answer your question?
We're here to fight."

I said 44, but I just like it. The 357 would serve you well too
Take your pick.

Thats a tough one but I'm partial to the 357 myself maybe max?  Better yet one of each would probably be the way to go.  That way there won't be any second thoughts later on.

.357 for plinking and fun, .44 for hunting. (not that you can't knock a deer down at 100 yards with the .357, especially reamed to .357 maximum)

The .357 is much cheaper to shoot.  It can be reamed to .357 Max which equals the .30-30.

I voted for the 357. I have two 44s that I Like and plan to get a 357. I would Ream it to max for hunting and have a very versatile gun. All these guys can't be wrong> ;) If you just want it for killing deer or hogs then the 44. And as said the 357 will do that also. You're gonna wind up with both. ;D

I own neither, but I think they both would be great but the 357 would open up a few more options for you in that you could fire 38 spec, 357 mag and 357 max (reamed) in it and it should shoot pretty flat with the max.

I have had both the 44 and the 357.My vote is for the 357, and has been stated it can be reamed to 357 Maxi and that is an entirely different animal.    hth   Doug

Ya gotta get both, or we'll talk trash about ya. ;D  Seriously, start with the 357, ream to the max and then order the 44.  357 is cheaper to feed whether you buy off the shelf or roll yer own.  And the things are impossible to shoot without gettin' a grin on yer face.  DP

I dont have nuttin against a "tree fitty sebun" I just have more experience with a 44 and I really like it. I could be talked into a 357 cause i do like the idea of a 357 max. Now what case do you use to make that round ?

The 357 is so versatile. I reamed mine to a Maximum, but I still shoot smaller stuff more. It is parked by the back door for pest control. I keep 38 Specials with a wad cutter loaded up. I have both the 357 and 44 Mag Handis. I shoot the 357 more by far. I read where guys want 32 H&R mags or 25-20's or any other small case like 9 mm or 45 ACP. They certainly have their right, but the 357 is as cheap to shoot or cheaper than most and will do what they will and more. Load it up to Max with heavy constructed 180 or 200 grain bullets and you can knock any thing down this side of a griz at 100 yards or deer out to 200 yards. If I was going to use it strictly for hunting big game, get the 44 Mag ream it to 445 Super Mag and limit your shots to under 150 yards or under 100 yards for the 44 Mag. If you want a gun you can use all year long get the 357.

LaOtto222,

Why would the 445 Super Mag be limited to 150 yds or less but the 357 Max be good for 200 yds on big game?
I can't understand the logic there.

I voted for the .44mag because it don't have to be reamed to anything.  Over half of the responses for the .357mag are voting that way to be reamed to the max cartridge.  If you want to alter the basic chambering, remember the .44 can be reamed as well.  I got both, but how is it that the .35 rem. is limited to 150yds by most experts and the .357max is somehow a 200yd. cartridge is beyond me.  Besides all that I thought the question was  .357mag.  or .44 mag.  choose only one!!!  Bill439

I guess we should ask what you intend to do with this rifle.

The 444 Marlin is also an expansion of the 44 mag, just more so.  Though the 445 Supermag will still shoot 44 mag and Special rounds.

I vote .357. Handi I have two, one is a Max.  I also have a .445 Super Mag Handi.  The .357 Max is cheaper to shoot with a wider range of ammunition.

357 for plinking, 44 for hunting, 30-30 so you can plink, hunt, and have an SB2 frame for more toys. Reaming, handloading, mailordering ammo is not for everyone.

I can't understand the logic there." - Spanky

Fair enough, that is not exactly what I said, but I can see how I muddied the water.

Explanation -

I can see how you thought I was using two standards. I was thinking of using the 445 as a Moose or Elk type weapon with a deer thrown in once in a while. There is no doubt the 445 Super Mag has more knock down that a 357 Max. 445 Super Mag - 150 yards on big stuff, like Moose or Elk, 100 yards for the 357 Max. Deer are both about 200 yards, both start dropping off pretty quick after that. It would be helpful with the 357 Max to have a pointy bullet to help retain energy out at 200 yards, but that is the practical limit for deer sized game. If you really know your rifle you can extend that range some with a 445 on deer, but you are starting to get big rainbows (running out of energy, but still enough). The 357 Max is more versatile from 38 Special wad cutters to the 357 max - but if you are hunting bigger stuff exclusively, the 445 Super Mag makes more sense. IMHO the 44 mag has the advantage over the 357 Max up to about 75 - 100 yards on bigger game. At further ranges the 357 Max gets the edge at 100+ yards due to it's higher velocity and better BCs, but is still not enough for the big stuff beyond 100 yards. Hands down - the 44 Mag is superior to the 357 Mag for deer sized game and bigger at any effective range.

Another vote for the .357. While I love a .44 mag. in a carbine, the low cost of ammo for the .357 whether you load your own or not, will let you shoot it a whole lot more.
