35 whelen factory ammo
« on: November 02, 2009, 09:12:32 AM »
As of now i do not reload my own ammo.  That is an after season project.  Does anyone have any feed back good or bad about factory ammo offereings i can pick up for rifle season that starts in less than 2 weeks?  I have a box of remington 200 grain that i will start my zeroing with.  I am impressed by double taps numbers on the barnes 200 tsx & their 225 grain accubond.  I am not asking which fail to fire less frequently, but any first hand experience on whitetail damage or accuracy issues.  I am leaning toward there 225 accubond at the moment but before i spend 50 bucks a box would like to hear some good, the bad, & the ugly.  Thought i read some where the 200 grain did not seem as accurate?  Also seen mention of the hornady light mag, but didn't find anything on it.  Thanks  Patrick

The Remington Core-Lokt is the best deer bullet you can buy.  If the ammo will go off (known Whelen Handi problem)I'd stick with the Remingtons.

Thanks Swampman, I guess its the "grass is always greener on the other side" kinda deal.  Looking at the drop @ 300 there is a pretty wide margin.  Haven't seen what the rifle likes as of yet either, but there is a lot to be said for solid performance.  300 yard shots won't be the norm, but 150-200 might be.  Just looking for any feed back before i pickup any another offering.

I'd get the Hornady Light Mag if you can find it, I only found reference to it being available in Mississippi tho. The Conley Precision looks to be a good choice to try also.
