Popping open
« on: October 29, 2009, 03:31:58 PM »
Took the handi 308 to the dirt pit today. Started out shooting the Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain no problems.Thought I would try out the Federal Power-Shok 150 grain. Shot 10 rounds and every time the rifle popped open. Went back to the Remmys and again never had a problem. I shot about 40 rounds of the Federal in it last time I shot it and never had a pop open. Wonder what gives here? ??? Seems to me if something was wrong with the rifle it would have popped open with both rounds not just one.

Sounds like it needs some pop open medicine. Look in the FAQ's Cabinet for bottle marked "Pop open Medicine" Kurt

This is a question that I am sure Tim or one of the others will have an answer for.

I would suspect a lock up problem.
The Federal ammo may be just a tad hotter causing the latch to disengage.
You stated that you used Federal ammo before with no problems.
Was this ammo from the same box or lot #?
If not, then the Federal ammo you are using now may be a little larger not allowing the latch to fully engage.

I would bet its a headspace problem with the ammo, it only needs to be one or two thousands longer from the shoulder to the base of the cartridge to cause it to not lock up properly, especially if your rifle is set up real tight.

I bet there is some oil or bore solvent on the latch.  You need to take the barrel off and clean both parts and leave them bone dry.

Assuming all the usual suspects are dealth with, good latch engagement, dry latch/shelf, I'd go with Bob, or it could be a combination of issues, insufficient latch engagement and warm loads. Chamber one of those Federals and look for light across the barrel/breech joint that's not there when the chamber is empty.
