45-70 gets a Buck
« on: October 29, 2009, 10:23:53 AM »
My hunting partner and his H&R 45-70 BC got this 190 pound 9 point yesterday 10/28/09 at 8:35 AM Central in Pleasant Hill, Louisiana.  The doe was acting funny, looking back and acting nervous, he decided to just watch her thru his scope when he saw a buck just peaking his head up over the crest on the knoll of the hill.  The buck was watching the doe that had just walked up over the crest knoll eating corn and food plot plantings on one of our shooting lanes.  She had just walked up over a crest of the knoll and the buck was watching her but wouldn't come on any farther.  He watched and waited but when the buck turned to go back down the hill he shot it in the neck.  The buck disappeared, he waited for 2 hours until I finished my hunt, elsewhere on the lease, and joined him to go look for it.  We went down to the crest of the knoll and he was laying on his back as if he had rared up and fell over backwards right where he was standing.  His right leg was drawn up like he was going to kick.  Rodney said he aimed at his head to allow for a 4 inch drop in the bullet.  The shot ranged out to be 190 yards.  The bullet entered left side of the neck, traveling out the other side leaving an exit hole about the same as the entry hole.  After cleaning and removing the hide, the exit hole in right side of his neck was in the meat was found to be big enough that you could insert two plus fingers in to the neck.  The bullet fragmented and one piece came out at the knot where neck and spine join, another piece came out the lower left neck by the left front shoulder and another fragment came out behind left front leg at the rib cage.  As you can see in the some of the pictures he bled alot.  When we processed him there wasn't much blood left in him. Ammo used was Hornady LEVERevolution 45-70 Govt 325gr FTX.  We love our H&R 45-70's and Hornady LEVERevolution 325 gr FTX bullets.  Longest Deer shot with 45-70 has been 270 yards, the farthest a deer has run after being shot with 45-70 is 50 Yards.  Most have dropped in their tracks.

Very nice buck.  I wish my scope would have come in today.  I wanted to sight my .45-70 in tomorrow.

Thanks for sharing. Great story.  Im surprised the bullet fragged that much at 190yds.  I shot them into wet paper at 50 and had total core seperation.  I just figured it was the velocity and short range.  I think i was running it around 2400fps.  Cant argue about your buddy's performance though.  Nice shooting too!

Great deer...great hunt....great shot....great rifle.....great ammo.  Gotta love the .45-70 LEs.  Oh yeah....almost forgot ta tell ya...it's just a hundred yard rifle. ;) ;) ;)  Obviously your buddy knows his rifle and his round.  That's what it takes with a .45-70.  Congrats to him for being a superb hunter and marksman.

He's an old benchrest shooter.  He is teaching me the ways!!  All of our shooting lanes are over 300 yards long.  We like to drop them where they stand.  We don't like having to go find them, too many big rattle snakes and water moccasin's, but we do if we have too.  My son in law has a Jack Russell female that loves to find them for us.  She gets mad if we leave her at the camp.  She just stays in a kennel on the hunting cart or gets in the tent with us and currles up in a corner waiting to do her thing. If your ever in North Louisiana and see a Gray Duelly Ext Cab pulling a long white trailer with "The Honey Bunn Man" written on it, say hello to him.  He is known all over North Louisiana as "Honey Bunn".  He and his brother sell Honey Bunns and snacks to all the stores, big and little all over the Northern half of Louisiana.

MY wife's company has a drilling crew down in Louisiana now on some island.  I think they're on a military base there doing geothermal.  The Yankee Boys were soooooo upset when they saw the snakes and gators. :'(  These guys are "Yoopers", from Michigans Upper Peninsula.  They didn't even know poisonous snakes existed, or that you could get eaten by a gator or crock.  They're almost done, and it'll be a chuckle to debrief them when they come home.

We have some big Cougars and Black Panthers roaming the woods, (they tranqualized 1 bear and 2 Cougars up in a tree inside the city limits in a housing development last year) and little Black Bears here too.  We killed a rattle snake last year as big around as a mans thigh that had three cat squirrels in it's stomach.  We have had survey crews, drilling people all over our wood because of the Haynesville Shale discovery.  Land has become to pricy to buy as they were paying up to $22,000.00 an acre (that's no misprint on the dollar amount)to lease mineral rights.  They are drilling all over this area.  Big wells coming in, making land owners instant millionaires.
