New to me Handi 30-30

Just purchased this Handi in 30-30 . Waiting on delivery...Had been looking for a while , some near miss's , being out bid ...ect... ect... ect...

used but as new condition...
I'm now on the hunt for a straight stock (with out pistol grip)

Any 30-30 Handi Fans
out there ?

Just got a new one about 2 months ago seems to like 150gr and 170gr rem core lokts. I'm jealous of your schnabel forend!

I'm a huge fan of straight grip/Schnabel forend stocks. All of my H&R's have it, it just feels right. From what I've read around here the 30/30 Handi is one of the most accurate out of the box Handis there are.

Boy ..i had a time finding one to my like'n ..
30-30 has always been one of if not my favorite caliber..,my first deer rifle was a Glenfield (Marlin) 30-30 (i still have it)..
I have always kept a alot of different caliber rifles ,till recently,I sold all my Deer/ Bear rifles but 3 ,   2    30-30's  a 94 and a Glenfield and a 336 in 35 Rem. ..all huntin guns ,  I just had a hanker'n for a single shot.

i guess the 30-30 beat out these caliber's (in my safe)
 356, 350 Rem. Mag, 30-06 ,308 ,375 H&H  , 9.3 X57 ,9.3X62 ,8mm, 7X57, 375 Win, 444 M ,45/70

i handloaded and shot all these calibers,and my 30-30 stayed in the safe , and one crisp cold Morning I reached in the bsack of my safe Dug out my Glenfield , took off my old Weaver 4x fixed and , brought home a nice bodied 6 pt. buck ,

thats when i started thinning the heard...none of the other calibers could have done any better.  They may kick harder ,bark loader ,but there bite is not that much more (in real world Deer huntin)

I 'd like to have a straight stock....i think they look better.

I picked up a Topper 30-30 for a hundred bucks last month. Looked unfired, dated 1985. Finally got to shoot it last Friday. Got to say I really like it. Very light recoil, after shooting my 45-70 Handi! :)

Do 30-30 barrels come drilled and tapped for scope mounts?
Can you remove the metallic sights and plug with screws?

Yes its drilled and tapped and the sights are removable...my new Handi 30-30 has a Williams rear sight but the front sight has a  really small screw. Anyone know the thread size ?  TF

The plug screws from the scope rail holes will work on the rear site holes

That would apply to the scope base and rear sight holes, but not necessarily on the front sight, H&R has switched back and forth between 6-48 and 3-48, "really small" means it's a 3-48.  ;)

While I have been keeping my eyes open for a ejector 30-30 with little luck , I did find a completely set up survivor bull barreled 308 in a shop , asking $299.00 and that has had me salavating a bit , since it would give all these .308 bullets, 308 brass and dies a purpose again ;)

I've been hittin the local Wally World ..and picking up a box of Winchester here and there...some 170 some 150.....I've hunted with a ole Glenfeild (Marlin) 30-30 on and off for years ..i really can't tell much diff. between the 170 or the 150 on White tail ..but Black Bear  I use 170 gr. only...

If you want a straight stock, you can always take a saw to the pistol grip, sand it down to match the contours of the rest of the stock and there you are.

I picked up a Topper 158 .30-30 made in '68 a few months ago for $100.  it was covered in and filled with dust, missing the buttplate, but othewise appeared unfired.  The bore was discolored with what appeared to be dried up light grease or heavy oil.   A little compressed air removed the dust, a spritz of Kroil into the receiver got everything in there moving smartly and several cotton patches soaked with coleman fuel cleared the bore quite nicely.  Just for giggles, I passed a patch soaked with Butch's Bore Shine through the bore to see if there was any copper fouling.  Nope.

So I busied myself casting a pile of wheelweight 311291's in my oooold Ideal 2-cav.  I tumbled 'em in  Lee mule snot, sized em .311 and gas checked em prior to retumbling.   1cc of Unique pops 'em into nice 4 1/2" and 5" clusters at 100 yards with the Marble folding rear sight as high as it'll go. 

I like single shots, my go-to rifle is a Ruger #1 .308, but this little el-cheapo pot iron is insinuating itself into my affections.  Light, delicate looking, and points as naturally as any gun I've ever shouldered.  That and I can perforate pop cans with delightful regularity as far away as I can see 'em.   At the age of 65 with my bifocals that isn't all that far, but still.

Anyway since this little rifle seems never to have had jacketed bullets through it, I think I'll keep it  that way and use it exclusively for cast bullet shooting.  I have two pre-teen nephews and a 14 yr old neice who love to shoot.  Since the cast bullet load shows so little recoil, and such good accuracy, I think this rifle would be the perfect rifle for them to share.

I've posted somewhere about belling the mouths of some cases to take .310" roundballs.  Those and .3cc of Bullseye make so little noise that it's possible to shoot in the back yard without the neighbors knowing.  Lubed with a wipe of Crisco, they are minute of soda cracker at back yard distances and have  already sent one marauding 'possum to 'possum heaven.  We've got a pretty bad 'coon problem locally and that roundball load might make good in-town 'coon medicine.  The sweet thing about single shots is that they take almost any bullet well because there's no fussing about magazine considerations.
