Question for AtlLaw or others with a 45/120........

Hello,

   I was curious if anyone who has reamed a rifle to 45/120 still shoots 45/70 rounds. If so, how is accuracy compared to before the reaming. Also, how is the accuracy of the big rounds as compared to a '70, or '90. I have a Mauser action 45/70 I have been considering reaming. I also have a NEF 45/70, but as long as it is shooting 1/2 inch groups(see prior post) I am not about to disturb it.  Thanks in advance for all responses, and have a great day.

It will still shoot the 45/70's but because of the long jump, accuracy will suffer some.

I haven't in mine, but from others who have, besides the long jump you'll get carbon fouling in the chamber that will likely build up if you shoot the shorter rounds much and it will need cleaning before you shoot the longer stuff in it, pretty much the same as shooting 44spcl in 44mags and 38s in 357mags or Maxis.

I was pondering the same thing too..  The 45-120's shell alone is 3.25" long..   And even a 300gr slug and you're at 3.5" easy.   Compound that for bigger slugs.

My 120's accuracy isn't quite as good on paper targets as my 70's, but rarely do I shoot at paper.  With more room in the case that you'll ever need for smokeless, getting a consistent load is a bit more difficult.  If you're gonna shoot BP, it will be a bit more consistent.

With 70's in a 120 chamber, accuracy drops a bit.  That long jump to the rifling isn't good.  Its not like having a proper freebore, but rather an oversized void that allows the bullet to wobble before engaging rifling.

If a magnum Mauser could be equipped to feed 45-120 shells...holy cow.  I may need one.  I could load it to whatever pressures I liked, and have more than one shot for when I flinch!

You might get a 1917 Enfield to work with a little creative milling. I've made a couple 375 H&H's on them. Building the box magazine would not be fun and I have no idea if he bolt head can be opened up enough for it. It would be an EXPENSIVE job.

You could also have a Magnum Mauser Made to order.....again, EXPENSIVE and neither would feed well IMO.
