Tikka, 287 yds
« on: October 12, 2003, 04:04:31 PM »
Well I finally took my Tikka WH Blu/Syn 243 Win out to shoot at distances further than 100yds. I bought a Leica 800 rangefinder and set up the target in a pasture. The only hold ups was waiting for a passing cow or 2, and 1 BIG BULL. The lay of the land and the tall brush did not allow 200 or 250 yds shots. At 287yds I set up and with the Harris Bi-Pod I shot 3 different hand loads. 100gr Horn BTSP w/IMR 4064 had a 5" 3 shot group 4" low 3" right. 2 were 1 1/8" apart. 100gr Sierra BTSP w/IMR 4350 had a 3 1/4"x3" 3 shot group 4 1/2" low and 4 1/2" right. 80gr Sierra Varmiter Blitz BTSP w/IMR 4064, 6 shot group 5 1/2", 5 1/2" low 4 1/2" right. 3 of the six went 2 1/2". The temp was about 75deg wind steady 10-15mph from the NW. I was shooting to the north, north west.
The ballistic calculator I use showed I should be about 6.5" low at 300 yds on the 80 grainers w/a 200 yd zero (1 1/2" high at 100).
I did some 103 yd shooting first since I had the action out of the stock for a good cleaning after hunting in the rain a couple of months ago so I had to check out ZERO. My Tikka is torque sensitive on the front screw. Snug, not overly tight. At 103yds the 80 gr BTSP Sie shot a .507 CTC, Horn 100gr BTSP shot .780 CTC and the 100 gr Sie BTSP shot 1" CTC. I think I had a couple of diff powder loads in that batch. I shot factory Federal 70gr TNT HP. 2 1/2" oto. This gun does not like flat base bullets (factory at least) Rem Core Lokts and WW Power Points included.

Beautiful day out shooting.

Later,
Randy

I typically find that most rifles shoot Boat-Tails better than flat based bullets.  In my Tikka Stainless Synthetic - also in .243, it grouped about 1" at 100 with Winchester PPs, but with Boat-Tails, it grouped about 1/2"!

  I guess I was so Jazzed I rambled. I was hoping for input from others on how your "PET" rifle does at distances greater than the magical 100 yds. I really was looking for some feedback.

Thanks,
Randy
