Handi .223/1:9 - 75gr. A-Max vs. Water Jugs
« on: October 20, 2009, 07:09:49 AM »
Curious to see what happens to the .224 Hornady 75gr. A-Max when confronted with something besides paper, I set up a line of 6 water jugs and fired one round with the Handi .223 with 1:9 twist at 50 yds..
The A-Max is classified as a match/target bullet and is not generally mentioned being used for hunting but I have used it on a few coyotes.

The results left the plastic tip and quite a bit of lead in very small bits in both #1 & #2 water jugs. The remaining jacket and lead (as pictured) were captured inside water jug #3. The remaining 3 jugs were knocked off the bench as a result of the impact.

The total weight of the intact copper jacket and lead was 52.3 grains.

Nice work Bill, but are they consistent? One may work fine, then the next one may either pencil thru or blow up.  ???

Good question! I was surprised when I saw it in jug #3, as I figured it would "pencil thru" as you said. I will have to try it again one day. For now, my new to me .204 Ruger barrel is my new attention grabber. Just got the last of my new dies and other .204 stuff via FedEx today, so the .223 will be taking a back seat for a while.

Bill:
have you tried to get a group with the 75 grainers, Mine is 1/9" but will not group anything heavier than 62 grs!! The 62's are under 1/2"

I shot 3 deer with my AR15 and these bullets last year.  They all exited and destroyed the deer, performed perfectly for me.

I get good groups with my 1:9 with all 60gr. and over, in particular the 60gr. V-Max, 64gr. Win. PP & the 75gr. A-Max. Anything under 60gr. has produced poor results.

Havent had any play time with the A-maxs in the .224 diameter .. Have liked them in the larger calibers ... That is interesting for sure... Maybe if work picks back up somewhere in my life time i'll have to look into those .. I know the 75gr TAP ammo from Hornaday were the cats meow from my handi as far as accuracy and hunting knock down are concerned..

I guess that just goes to show you that Handi's are individuals.  I have a 1:9 .223 and had mediocre accuracy with 55-62gr.
Then got 50gr. Fiocchi V max loads.  Very accurate in my bull barrel.  But come to think of it every V max I have shot from 22mag to 3006 has been very accurate.
