New to handgunning but love my buckmark bullseye .22.
What would be versitle handgun for this type of hunting?
Elk-blacktail-bear. I was thinking 100yards to 200 yards max.
I've got a nice Burris I can slam on it. :grin:

You into tracking or killing? I just picked up an EAB 338-06 and it's 200 graing bullet will fill the bill for each. I'll let you know how it does on Elk cuz it goes for a hunt on Tuesday!! You really have to ask yourself factory or wildcat or handload only at least. .444, 45-70 are teh big thumpers--7-08, 270, 280, 308, 3006 for th factory and verything in btween. The choices are many, that's I have so many to choose from!!! It just comes down to what you want to use. Good luck, I still have a tough time deciding!!

I was thinking along the lines of 308 or 44mag factory loads.
How far will a factory 44mag reach out and effectively down an animal?
I'd guess 75-100yard with a well placed shot but I could be wrong.
Like the fact that the 44mag could be used for other things and hold six rounds bear country.
The 308 would reach a bit further. But wich would be best for deer and elk? I would think that 100yards is the limmit for the 44.

Well, the problem of range is not that bad with a Thompson Encore, you can reach 200 if you practice. It is only one shot though and if you want six then you need a revolver, and with that you can kiss 200 yrds good-bye. If you have to have six then get the biggest you find. To me there is no such thing as overkill when it comes to bears. Unlike most animals, they can eat you. If you can make do with one shot then get an
encore in 450 Marlin. That should take care of your needs with a range out to 150 give or take.

I got into pistol hunting for the challenge of having to get in closer to my game so I use a SBH Hunter 44 mag. I never really had much use for any real long range single shot pistols. Now this is just my oppinion but I feel that using a rifle cartridge in a single shot pistol isnt really pistol hunting at all, its just hunting with a cut down rifle. If you want the true experience and challenge of hunting with a pistol go with a wheel gun.

As others have said, if you want to really experience a handgun hunt go with a wheel gun. 44 MAG minimum to S&W500. Seeing you mentioned bear I would go big. I also have an Encore in 30-06 which would be better for longer range. The 45-70, 444 Marlin and 450 Marlin would also be great and you can get all three in a Magnum Research BFR with 5 shots. Or if you prefer a 45-70 in the Encore. Man the choices. I just ended getting most of them because I could not decide. Now I have to decide which one to take.

Hmmm, well here is my .02 cents. If you want the ultimate handgun challenge get a good revolver, I love my 445 supermag Dan Wesson. It is scary accurate and is very capable of shots at 150+ easy. But its up to that range but its the nut behind the gun that is the limiting factor. I myself am only good to 50 75 yards for now but practice I hope to increase it for next year. But that is half the fun. Good luck and hope you have fun. :grin:

I don't think anyone mentioned the .454 Casull yet. I abandoned my single shots after developing an almost un-natural affection fore SRH in .454. Six inch stainless with 4x Leupold and very capable at 150yds.
Of course as many others said, practice, practice, practice!!!!

v-man, I think the 454 Casull falls between the 44MAG and 500MAG as I posted. And yes it is a great round also.

I shoot all my guns as often as I can. I try to go at least once a week. There is no substitute for practice...

I would suggest a T/C Encore 15" 308 Win. For someone just getting into large caliber handguns the recoil is not bad and they are very accurate. The Encore is a 200 yard handgun with proper practice and good optics. I shoot a 15" Encore 308 Win scoped with a 2.5X8 Leupold and have taken several deer with it. Try one your gonna like it, trust me.
