Factory accuracy?

I'm looking into getting a 223 for screwing around with. When looking around at my local shop a handi was suggested to me. I own 2 already, a 17 and a 45 70. Neither of which is very accurate. The 45 70 is a hell of a brush gun and accurate enough so I love it.

Anyhow, the dude behind the counter was trying to talk me into a black, heavy barreled handi. He mentioned it because I had said I was thinking about just getting a barrel for my encore. He said they are extremely accurate now and it would make more sense to buy a whole new gun over just getting a barrel, that would cost more.

So what's the take? Groups at a 100 yards, how do they do on average?

I seem to recall someone saying the factory considered 4 inches at 100 yards to be factory accuracy.  Some seem to do better and some seem to not quite make the mark.  Larry

Do you or would you like to make a gun shoot MOA if it does'nt out of the box? The FAQ's can cure most any problem you might have. If you can't fix it you might have to return it for factory service. The risk of that isn't that high. 100% guarantee out of the box isn't there. If you want that, pay for the "guarante", at what ever level you wish, in other brands,  buy it. I work on them even if they are accurate.

Best bet to buy a gun that shoots is to buy a used one with targets and load data. Seller could fudge that of course, but most would not.

The factory accuracy standard is 2" or less, 3-shot 100yd groups with factory ammo, the 223 will easily do that with ammo it likes.

The 223 bull barrel i had with nothing more then a rubber "O" ring in between the forearm and the barrel and it would produce dime size and smaller groups at 100 yards with the 75gr Hornady TAP ammo and about 1" to 2" groups with some other brands... But the TAP ammo for all around performance was my "GoTo" round for deer hunting ,yote busting and even 257 lb. hogs ( even if you werent planning on using a 223 to knock um' down with one shot)

 Seem to do fine by me ... Really cant say that any of the handis i have owned couldnt shoot well to really well , maybe i'm just lucky i dont know..

My .223 that I hand fitted to my frame currently shoots just under an inch at 100 yards for the first group, but as the barrel warms it starts opening up quite a bit. It is one of the older 1-12" twist standard contour barrels. Keep an eye on the barrel temperature and it may shoot very well. But if you need better odds at being accurate out of the box, then buy a Savage.

all of my .223 handis have been very good, I dont shoot groups so I cant tell you what they measured, but most of the time they hit what im aiming at, so I dont blame the gun for missing

as far as my others go, all have been good, I havent had one yet that hasnt been a shooter, though I dont punch much paper, just to sight in and a little practice here and there, so My standards are based on if it will hit the game im shooting at consistantly.

I bought a used 24" .223 heavy barrel from a fellow on this site. Stuck it on one of my frames that it seemed to fit, get around 1 1/2" at 200 yards with the 45gr Winchester factory ammo. Don't know how much of that spread is shooter induced, but I was shooting off sandbags. Velocity was around 3550-3575 average at 10'. I'm satisfied.
