45 LC barrel length and bullets
« on: October 11, 2003, 06:32:25 PM »
I recently purchased a Ruger Bisley in 45LC.  It came with a 7 1/2" barrel.  I would like it to have a shorter barrel and would like some opinions on lengths that work for some of you.  Also, I am going to use this gun for hunting.  The hunting I will do, at least at first, is hogs and deer.  What are some good factory loadings for this round?

Thanks in advance

I like 4 5/8s but for a beginer 5 1/2 is probably better. Cant help you with the factory loads Ive never shot a single one.

My Bisley .45 LC is the SS limited edition with 5.5" barrel. (Only Ruger gun I own) I sure wish mine was 7.5". I'd sure not wish for a shorter one.

I've got one of those 5.5" SS LE Bisleys too.  It's pretty fond of the 260 gr JHP from Buffalo Bore.  They have several interesting loads, but that's the one I've kinda latched on to for deer.  Anything tougher, and I'd go with one of their HCL offerings.

IMHO... If you are only going to carry that gun for hunting leave the barrel as is.  As for factory hunting loads you wont find much from the big name manufacturers available. In my area the only chain store that has any 45 long colt AT ALL is Dicks and it is only cowboy stuff. Check out what your local gun shop has in Garrett , Cor bon or buffalo bore. CorBon makes a couple of dandy 45 long colt loads. A 260 gr hollow point for deer and a 300 gr FN that will do a number on hogs or deer. They all have web sites you can check out. Hope that helps. :-)
