How well does your Savage 99 shoot ?
« on: October 13, 2009, 06:17:31 AM »
I never thought much of them as a rifle or a shooter untill I stumbled on one recently, it's a 99f in .308. I was going to use it for trade material untill I started handeling it and took it out to shoot.  This feather weight rifle is very well balanced, and easy to point. As to shooting, it's scary with almost any ammo it will shoot 3 shot groups in a inch at 100 yds. I just don"t believe it shoots that good but I keep trying it with different ammo with the same result. Is this a fluke ?
How do your 99's handle and shoot ? and with what factory shell. I believe I will take it to the deer woods in November.

I see you doubt the 99 as being a serious shooter !! I read some of your posts from the day you got the gun . Yeah Man!! they will shoot when you do your part . I have known many that use a 99 . Most of the guns are old and the rifling worn, and still I see the 'ol timers put them where they want .
I have had a eye open for a good unit myself but they are getting as rare as hens teeth here in Central Ontario Canada .
So get that stock fixed or replaced and enjoy what you have . Most of the guns sold here are from the old timers were they and the guns --just got too worn out .
The good units are kept , maybe passed on , but hardly ever sold or traded . Why sell it when they work so well ?

:)  : CB, My .300 will shoot around 1" with Rem. 150 grain, not so well with WW. Both my .250 and 358 do not group around 1 in. The .358 is the worst, but it is still plenty accurate for deer and bear in the timber. I have shot in additon to deer, hogs, and antelope with it. It will group well with handloads, but for woods hunting and even most fields in the east the 99 is plenty accurate for deer. If you get into beanfield shooting, then a different rifle is required, but  too many folks are concerned with the minute of angle groups for deer hunting, and for most deer hunting it simply isn't required... Enjoy.... :D

I had a 308 that was apretty good shooter, but there is really nothing you can do about those triggers and they suck compared to a good rifle trigger.

if you get into beanfields just get a 110 30 06..try fusion 165s.. just one box given an educated group test ..i think you will have your field gun for 400 dollars equeal to 2-3-4- thousand dollar guns..
i mean you cant do any better than nail the target ...if you have it set up right with a good scope ...everyone ive seen was just that kinda gun..no exaggeration here at all. ..an im talking strait out the box an sighted in properly..
that gun loves that particular rnd..
they do fine with rem corlofts an winchester power points also but that fusion 165 makes it a gnat shooter. slim
ps the only reason i said the 110 is someone said his 99 was just pasable accurate..

Two years ago my brother shot a coyote at two hundred yards on the run. Two hours later, he shot a nine point buck in the head at 281 yards. It was standing just off the drop of a field and the head was all he could see.
The rifle he was using was a 99 F in 300 Savage. Since then the gun has been sent to the gunsmith. The trigger has been cleaned, filed and polished to the point that it is at least as good as or slightly better than most factory triggers out of the box.
The Old Gun will hold 1 inch or smaller at 100yards and in the hands of a shooter that knows how to handle it, I would think it could do 400 yards or more.
Assuming the barrels are in good shape, I would put the 99 against any gun on the market today.

I have a 99A in 243 that is an accuracy freak, in fact it's shoots better than most all my bolt guns. It honestly will shoot a 3 shot 3/8" group with several brands of factory and handload 100 grain loads.

Thanks for the reeplies. I thought my .308 was a freek but like you you it shoots better than most rifles I've had or presently own. I think I'm going to look for a 99 A

I've had two 99Fs, one in .243 the other in .308. Neither would group under 2.5 inches. If you have a 99F that can shoot a three-shot, one inch group, hold on to that baby. 99Fs have thin barrels. Three shot groups are more than adequate in assessing a rifle's field potential. Five and ten shot groups are meaningless unless you plan to miss a lot and the game you're shooting at is so stupid that he'll let you go through a box of ammo until you can hit him.
