Handi rust removel

Ok I searched for the thread on this subject and I can't find it. I just picked 2 Handis (30-30 and 45-70) yesterday. One of them has a small spot of rust on the barrel but is otherwise clean. What is the best way to remove this rust spot without messing up the blueing? Thanks for any and all help.

you can use some 0000 steel wool and breakfree      it will clean it up nicely and leave the blueing intact.

I always use Breakfree CPL.  It's good for rust removal and prevention. Good Luck and enjoy those new handi's!!!!!!

H&R does a lousy job of bluing,  Two of mine developed rust spots, and I was unable to hold the rust at bay.  One became Green and one became white.  Rustolium Textured Paint, works great.

GOOD corrosion protecting oil works fine, Breakfree CLP and Eezox are two of the best.  ;)

+1 for oily 0000 steel wool. Oil it heavily and apply oil on the rusted area and start lightly buffing. As long as the rust is light and you don't get carried away with buffing, the bluing should be fine.

Breakfree CLP and Birchwood Casey Barricade have worked well for me. Have always heard great things about Eezox as well, just never seem to find it for sale when I'm thinking about it.

Years ago I was advised to use a penny on edge to remove rust. It worked so-so. It is a good way of removing most of a really bad rust spot, then follow it up with steel wool and CLP. Now days I use fine steel wool and a penetrating oil or rust preventative, it works well. I like Breakfree CLP. I have used it for years with excellent results and I can get it any where gun cleaning supplies are sold, even Walmart. When using a good rust prohibitive, it not only helps remove rust it works its way into the pores of the steel to help prevent further rust. Good Shooting and Good Luck

 I have always used the 000 and 0000 wool with a good oil for rust removal. I still do for some applications. For small spots I really like a good OLD penny and that same good oil. Using the edge of the coin, scrape off the rust. Doing this will leave some copper in the pit left form the rust. Then follow this up with a good burnishing and a coat of oil. DONE!!

Give it a try, I think you will like the results.
