Is the H&R handi rifle strong enough to be rebarreled to 375 JDJ?   The 375 JDJ would be a much better deer round than a 444 or 45-70 which are the other options.  What velocities could be expected with the 200 or 220 gr bullets from a 24" barrel if they can reach 2000+ fps out of 14" pistol barrels?

Easily, the 375JDJ is a Contender round which is not as strong as a Handi which comes factory chambered in 500S&W and 270 Win to name a couple high pressure chamberings you'll never see in a Contender. There are no drop in barrels for an H&R tho, the only way to get there is to rebore and rechamber an existing barrel, or have a stub made, either of which will cost $300 plus the cost of the donor parts.

An alternative if you can find a 2007 38-55 is to load to 375 Win pressures, 220gr jacketed bullets at just shy of 2400fps is very doable in the 28" barrel.  ;)

Just what I thought.  Thanks.  I will probably get a 444 so the ejector will be right. Cut the barrel off a about 4" from the breech face.  Bore & thread it & Machine a threaded tenion on a barrel & fit it all together.

That's referred to as a stub more or less, usually the entire chamber area is removed, threaded, then a donor barrel is threaded and joined to the underlug section of the barrel, many here have stubs, I have 6.5X55 made from a 308win H&R barrel joined to a 6.5 Shilen match blank, GBO sponsor Wayne York did the work, he also does rebores.  ;)
