W&R BC range report
« on: October 02, 2009, 06:07:32 PM »
My hunting buddy sold his Browning High Wall in 45-70 a few weeks ago for a large sum.
This gun has a total of 103 confirmed deer kills.
All 1 shot kills except three.

On a visit to one of our candy shops he picked up a very nice WESSON & RICHARDSON BC a couple of weeks ago for $300.00 out the door.
He used to have a H&R BC that refused to shoot 300gr JHPs.
It did pretty good with cast though.
ATLaw now owns the barrel in 45-120.
Anyway before he bought the W&R he asked me if I thought it would shoot the JHPs and I said it should because I had seen a few others that did.

Now for the report.
He mounted a 3x12 scope on it and headed to the range.
Took 5 shots to zero it at 50.
Two of these cut holes.
Moved to 100.
First shot low left 1" each way.
Adj and the next 3 cut holes.
Tried another group.
Two cut holes with the third not quite 1/2" low right.
This was with factory Win 300gr JHPs.
He is very pleased!
Can only hope it lives up to it's predecessor!!!   :) ;)

I got the old sights to put on my 38-55 TC.  :o

I've said it before...  ...when in doubt, shoot some Win Super-X 300gr JHP's out of your Handi or BC.   They will cut cloverleafs at 50 and ragged one hole'rs at a 100 with ease.

They are all I shoot from my 22" Handi because I cant improve on the load.  My BC's are another story, they get to suffer from my hand loading experiments. :D

I agree knight.
They are what shoots in my Handi.
My BC don't do to bad with them but not as good as the Handi.
I wish my BC shot as good as his W&R does.

Well Frank, you tell your friend for me that I'm glad his W&R shoots his preferred bullet so well for him.  Be sure to also tell him I'm even more glad he wasn't satisfied with my barrel!   ;D ;)  It shoots great and has given me more hours of pure pleasure then most of the wimmins I used to date!   :D

You may be right.
It is my buddys gun and I don't remember what it said.

Richard:

I told him about how well you are getting along with it and that you were able to take a deer with it before you went the 120 way.
He said he was glade someone was able to get some use out of it.
He just prefers to shoot the 300 JHPs and could not get it to shoot a decent group with them.
