30-30 accuracy?
« on: September 29, 2009, 11:05:40 AM »
I've been having a heck of a time finding the right load with the 30-30. I've tried 4 differnt powders all under Rem 150gr bullets. The best i've got was about 3.5" @100yds. I read on another reloading site that bullets make more of a difference in accuracy than powder. what do you guys think? I'm begining to think he may be right, and that this gun just won't shoot them well. what are your favorite bullets in 30-30?

Mine does excellent with 150gr Rem factory ammo, my 30-30AI shoots the 125gr Sierra Prohunter SPT even better. Read the Handi Basics 101, the 30-30 is one of the most dependably accurate H&Rs made.  ;)

I don't reload.  I killed my first two deer the same day, 50 years ago, with Winchester 170 gr. Silvertips and still use them today.  They'll cloverleaf at 100 out of my old Marlin 336, the rifle I used that day.

Quick,
I'm sure it's not the gun. at first I thought maybe the scope was bad. bought a box of factory Winchester 150's and it was dead on. Just cant get anything close to the factory rounds.

What's your procedure for working up a load? I work up from start data in ½gr increments, I've many times went from a 2" group to a ½" group and back to 2" with just the ½gr change, so if you're working up in 1gr or bigger increments, you could completely miss the sweet spot, always works for me.  ;)

I'm pickin' yer brains n learnin', Tim.  I'll file that one away for future reference.  I tend to be one of those "If it doesn't work, throw another gob on" guys.  Thank you, I'll remember that when I get my reloading gear together.

Crimp? Seating length? Are you using a micrometer to measure COL?

I usually start just over a starting load and work up in .5gr. I've even tried working up in .3grs. Trimmed all the brass to the same length. tried seating the bullet to the SAAMI max and down from there. I dont crimp. seems like they all do the same;get a couple close and then widening out letting the barrel cool between shots. I did get close today with a 3" group using a 4x scope, even swap out scopes once to see if thats the problem. I'm gonna get another box of factory rounds tomorrow and try them again.
could it just be the bullets? any idea what the velosity of factory Winchester are?

My best accuracy with my 30/30 Handi has been with 170 gr. Hornady FN bullets. I use W748 powder, with Win. LR primers and Rem. cases. I have a bunch of 150 gr. Rem Corelokt RN bullets and have yet to have them shoot well...either in my Handi or a Marlin 336A.

+ one more on the 1/2 grain increments. Just recently I had almost (not quite) the dramatic drop in group size that Tim describes above by just going up half a grain at a time. The groups went like decent, decent, sweet, and back to decent again. BTW the cases were all trimmed to the same length also. Charlie

I agree, mine is an old load with this powder. Its now considered over max so I will not share, but start lo and work up. I think you will find it shoots just as well in yours. Most every 30-30 I have owner or worked with have shot best with 170Gr bullets.
