I was told by some guy at a gunshow thats deals in TC's it was a relatively rare offering, im looking for a pistol barrel or carbine barrel in a deer approprioate caliber, and was thinking of trading it off, but before i do does anyone know if this would be true or if the guy at the gun show was just full of it.

thanks

basically some guy told me that a 30 carbine barrel in 10" may be relatively valuable/sought after.  I have no clue, so I was curious if anyone else know of any such thing.

Im looking to trade it to a gentleman I know, but wanted some clarification first in case it was in fact more valuable.

thats all, like I said I have no clue.

You still have not given anyone enough info to help you. In the first post you failed to mention the chambering and even tho you now have that's really all you've given is length and chambering. Sorry but that's just too little info to be of help in identifying what you have.

Folks need to know if bull barrel, tapered or octagon. What type sights, what condition, split or solid bolt and such.

I suspect it is one that a relatively few were made of so might be of interest to some collectors and perhaps even to some shooters but the specific details are what someone would need to know to help you figure a value.

The "bolt" is at the rear of the barrel, in the barrel block, and it protrudes out the rear of the barrel, spring loaded. There are several "styles" of "bolts". There are solid, split, and later split with the "dumbells" on the sides. If you press in on one side of the bolt, does the whole bolt move inwards, or only one half of the bolt (this will tell you if it's split or solid)?

The later bolts are split and split with dumbells on the sides instead of just round pegs. It all has'd to do with "improvements" over the years to help more barrels lock up on more frames without individual bolt polishing.

Not really a super-critical thing, as bolts can be swapped out fairly easily.

FWW--I've never had a 30 carbine bbl for my Contender, BUT I did shoot a 30 carbine Ruger blackhawk ONCE! That was one heck of a LOUD firearm. That may, or may not have something to do with how "rare" the short 30 carbine barrel is. Still one man's..., etc. Someone may be looking for one even now. Your best bet I think is to post on here what barrel you'd really like to trade it for and see what happens. Some guys just like tinkering with "new" calibers and may trade you for what you want.

Being an avid 30 carbine shooter I can tell you that not many people shoot this round unless it's from the M1 carbine or maybe a Ruger Blackhawk.  With the exception of it's use in an M1 rifle, it's fairly uncommon and not too many people have a use for it.  I tend to like the round and have a couple of firearms chambered for it, ironically, none are M1's.  I don't hunt anything large with firearms, typically nothing larger than a prairie dog and even for prairie dogs, albeit accurate, the 30 carbine lacks distance.  So it's basically a plinker and as far as plinkers go, people who plink typically like to shoot lots of ammo at a fast rate, as when fired from an M1.  So, a single shot pistol barrel hardly fits that description and personally, I don't think there are too many people out there like me that actually like the round.

To be honest, I've been looking for a 10 inch or preferably 14 inch 30 carbine barrel for my Contender.  The problem I have is that when I search for a used one, they guys that have them think exactly what you've been told; that they're rare and can be worth something.  Typically, the interpretation of that is to try to sell the barrel (used) for the same price in which a new one can be purchased.  If the barrel is in good condition you're probably not going to sell it for more than $180 to $200 IF you can find a buyer for it.

Well it is somewhat rare because you do not see that many of them.  Since it is round bull barrel I am gussing that it is not on the very rare side unless it falls into some other category that makes it that way.  Do a search for types of contender barrels and find out if it is a type I, type II, etc.  It would be more valuable if it is an older type as opposed to a newer barrel in that caliber.

Him saying tapered in response to my question tells me it's either one of the real old and early not yet bull barrels or an octagon tapered barrel. Either wasy likely old and potential of more value to a collect IF you find a collector who wants one. For a shooter it is likely next to impossible to sell.

I agree here.  If it's an old one that has some odd or uncommon configuration, then it may be worth something.  As just a standard shooting barrel, it's going to be hard to sell unless the price is low enough.

It is a definite accurate round when fired from the right platform.  My Blackhawk and my contender rifle shoot extremely accurately as well.

The 10" octagon barrel in 30 carbine isn't seen a lot.  I was told by a T/C dealer that I see at the Dallas area gunshows that the 10" round barrel in 30 carbine is rare and that it was only offered as a factory chambering (non custom shop) for one year.  I have one of each just because I am enjoy the M1 carbines and have LOTS of ammo.

     Hope this helps

  • IF ONLY I COULD GO BACK-I WOULD BE A MOUNTAIN MAN!
I have a 10" OCT barrel I picked up a long time ago when they were cheap, about $100.00.
It shoots great but like posted, it is loud.
Not as bad as my Blackhawk which is not nearly as loud as my friends AMT, that one hurts!!!

If you want to know how rare it is check with the sponsor at the top of the page, ED'S CONTENDERS.
This man really knows his stuff.
I have had lots of dealings with him and he will tell you the truth.
10" 30 carbine barrels are running around $180.00 used to $220.00 NIB.
Talk to Ed, he won't tell you wrong.
