Scope
« on: September 28, 2009, 10:29:30 AM »
Hi all
I need a scope for my 45-70,synth stock 22" Handi.
This will be my first hunt with the rifle. I would prefer 3-9x40 compact with a 4-5 inch eye relief. I have the standered  mount and hammer spur.

I need the scope because the eyes are getting old and cant see rear, front sites and target all at the same time. I am blind in left eye and wear glasses for distance viewing.

I am on a fixed income so need to keep the price under $100.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Rex

P.S. I will be hunting in Okla. so range will be 100yrds or less.

100 yards or less ??? ???  What happened to "Oklahoma, where the wind comes whippin' (or is it racing) "o'er the plains".  My .45-70 Handi wears a cheap Simmons 8 point 3-9x50. It has never let me down shooting from 30 to 300 yards.  Recoil doesn't seem to bother it.  I'm sure it's under a hundred bucks.  I don't know, it was on the rifle when I bought it.  I've got the same problem...eyes...need a scope.  I'm on a fixed income too.  It's called poverty. Patty and I are both on SS.  She's still working, so that helps a lot, and she has our insurance at work....that's why she's still there.

Rex, I forgot to mention, my .45-70 Handi is on a synthetic too.  I put 36 ounces of #4 shot in a sock in the stock and it reduced felt recoil with Hornady LEs to ziltch.

Check out the Bushnell Banner Dusk to Dawn Scopes. Good tough clear scopes for the money. Have a 1.5 x 4.5 on my 45-70, a 1 x 4
32 Circle X on both of my 20ga and 12ga slug guns and a 3 x 9 X 40 6" eye relief on my 444 on my hard kicker and various other powers on
others. Most are mounted with Burris Zee rings & none have given me a problem at all under a lot of conditions. Optic Planet.com is a place
to look and most are 100 or less.  Good shooting & good luck,  Fred

I would suggest the Simmons 2.5X20  power shotgun scope. I have them on a 22, 9mm,30-30 and a 357.CDNN has them for $19.95 plus shipping. I  had them on my 45-70 when I had it.  hth   Doug

I would recomend the busnell banner 3X9x40 they lurk right around $100 and will handle the recoil

Welcome aboard Rex! The Bushnells are good scopes for the price, see the 45-70 Scope link in the FAQs, due to the large power ring it will require high rings unless you bob the hammer spur which is easy to do.  ;)

Thanks guys

quick I did check out the FAQ and I will probably go with the Banner.
I have read all the FAQ's and there is a LOT of good info there.

Thanks again for the info

Oh and I have already add the shot to the butt stock.

REX,

I just posted this on the optics forum.

Natchez shooter has a weaver 4x32 classic shotgun scope on sale for around $80.  Retails around $240.  I have one, low profile works great on a Handi rifle/shotgun, fully multi coated lens.  In my opinion it is one of the best scope buys out there for a quality optic.  Tim (Quicktoo) gave me this tip awhile back and they still have some for sale.

I have the trophy camo 1.5x4 with the circle X also, its a good scope but I prefer the weaver.  The optics seem some better.

CDNN Investments has the Simmons 2½x20..  http://www.cdnninvestments.com/si28shpocosc.html

The 4x32 Weaver Bobby refers to is a great little scope for about $92 shipped, I have two of them, one on each of my 243 Superlights, they're made in Japan, bright and clear, easy to mount low.  ;)

I liked the 2.5 Simmons when I got it.  Was compact and right power range for my 44 Mag Handi.  But, it lasted 30-40 shots and that was it.  I do not trust the model any more.  Maybe others have better ones.  At $20 from CDNN it wasn't worth the $10 plus shipping to replace from Simmons.  I have other Philippine made Simmons scopes that are fine, but the 8 Point models are not reliable in my opinion.

The Bushnell Trophy would be my choice if they had a long eye relief version, otherwise I would say that the Banner one discussed or the Weaver 4x at Natchez.

I always suggest LEUPOLD, but even buying used, its not likely you will find one for your price point.

The one scope I NEVER advise for the Handi's in this price range, is the Bushnell. Nothing against the scope as far as quality. Simply said its too big!! It REQUIRES high mounts, this destroys good cheek weld that is required for good ergonomics and accurate shooting. I suggest you look hard at the other suggestions. Namely the Weaver shotgun scope.
I also have used these ultra cheap Simmons 2.5 scopes. they are neat and allow mounting INFRONT of the hammer ULTRA lo on the barrel. But I have found that there durability is extremely spotty. Some work PERFECTLY while others will not hold zero. I just cannot "afford" to gamble on these any longer.

I wouldn't let one bad one deter you Richard, there are a bunch of members here that have the 8-point 2½x20, Bayou's is the first complaint on it I've seen here, I know MSP Ret has at least 2 of em, mt3030 had one on his 45-70 with over 200 rounds of factory ammo thru it with no problems, it is a shotgun scope after all, and being a fixed power isn't so prone to failure as a variable. And one added bonus is if you have an Ultra rail, it can be mounted ahead of the hammer in low rings.  ;)

The recoil on a 45-70 is not sharp, it is more of a slower shove.  Yes, if is a big shove, but not sharp, like a .338 Win Mag shooting same weight bullet.  Almost any scope will do, the thing to look for is light gathering capability, and clarity.  Lower power is also better than high power, unless you are into shooting beyond 200 yards.  Sky currently has a Bushnell 1.75X4 on his 45-70 Handi and it is a good choice for that gun.

That's why I got 5, made shipping real cheap for each.  Figured if not real good, could put em on some 22's for close up Rabbit hunts, or targets. ;D  I've spent more for worse glass, so am satisfied.  We've talked about this before, but here goes again, I have glass from Ziess, Nikon, VXIII's on down to these little scopes and these work just fine for 99% of what most people will use em for.  If ya don't want em, don't buy em.  If you need or want only the best of the best then spend that 900 to 2600 dollars and feel good about it.  Just don't look down yer nose at me cause I just might shoot the deer you were looking at thru that high-dollar scope with a rifle wearin' one of these little cheapies. ;) ;D  DP
