30-06/20 Guage Combo?
« on: September 27, 2009, 07:07:01 AM »
There is an online retailer with a 30-06/20 guage combo (not saying who, since they only have one). I have some questions:
1. How is the recoil compared to a bolt action 30-06? I have a bolt action Eddystone 1917 that was sporterized by a previous owner, and I'm not happy with it. The scope height is just to high, and I am not a good enough wood worker to build a stock that would work with it.
2. I don't see this combo listed on the H&R site. Is this something made for a specific distributor?
3. Would I be better off getting a non-combo rifle and sending it in for the rifled 20guage barrel?

H&R has made many combo offerings for distributors and major retailers over the years, Dicks, Jerrys, Bud's and many others have carried them and have them in stock now. Bud's has a great price on their combos now, you couldn't buy a new H&R 30-06 and add any accessory barrel for less or even close to what they sell it for.

As for recoil, add a Limbsaver pad and/or add weight to the stock if it's too much for you, it's easily done, Limbsaver makes a prefit pad for the synthetic stock, the wood stock will require a small grind to fit or a slip on.

I got an SC2-S06 combo at Gander Mt this year. The 20 was a smoothbore. The receiver was nickel and the barrels were blue. Plastic stock.

I have had a number of .30-06 rifles over the years, from a sporterized Springfield 03A3 (bought through the mail from Klein's Sporting Goods for $60.  Ah yes, those were the days!), Remington 700, Savage 110, TCR-83 & TCR-87, and NEF Handis. The NEFs were the nicest to shoot.  They have a heavy barrel compared to the others, which tames the recoil very nicely.  I had mine set up with iron sights which made them extremely handy, to say the least!  I may be talking myself into another one....

I bought the same combo 2 weeks ago.  The local FFL received it.  When I called them they said.  There is shipping damage - the extra barrel was loose and scratched the stock.  They told me they had already sent it back and the replacement was on the way.  Got the replacement 2 days later.

Was the local FFL pulling my chain? or were there some scratches?

Impressions;  20ga.  2 rounds of skeet - not bad!!   Except for the bruise on the shoulder.

06 barrel   What scope to mount?  Low rings don't make it.  Need high rings to clear.  Put a Aimpoint on it to get some round down range.  Noticed something was loose when I put on the 06 barrel but out the door I went.  Some strange groups later.  Realized the buttstock was the rattle.  The 50 rounds of skeet loosened the synthetic buttstock.

Lessons learned from this.  The gun is accurate and hits where I look.   Get the limbsaver recoil pad if you are going to much shooting!!!!!!

Would I buy this again?    In a heart beat.

Have been looking around for this FAQ's list and cannot find it.  Would love to review them as I just got an 06/20 ga Handi myself.  Can anyone point me to them?  Thanks

Recoil for the 30-06 Handi is very mild in my opinion.  In my classes I have 12 and 13 year old kids, girls and boys shooting my 30-06 Handi with no problems.  Cannot understand why so many people go to such great lengths to tame something that is already tame.  If H&R had come out with the .300 Handi what would be done to that?

Guys I don't mean to ridicule anyone, it's just I have a hard time understanding how someone can think the lowly 30-06 has too much recoil.  Maybe it's because I shoot the big magnums so much, but the 30-06 is very mild to me.  I have not done anything to mine to tame it, and I load some pretty stiff loads.

Now a .416 Rigby in a T/C Encore, there is some recoil.

A friend of mine has that same combo (I talked him into buying it). I have a bad neck and shoulder so I'm a big time recoil wimp. Such a wimp that I bought a 45 Colt Carbine to hunt deer with because I can't stand recoil. That being said I've shot quite few rounds through my friend's '06 Handi and the recoil isn't bad at all. I did start to feel it after quite a few rounds but it shouldn't bother someone who has a healthy shoulder and neck. My 20 gauge Pardner with 3" turkey loads is worse and even that isn't too bad.

Well, I fired abou 65 rounds of 30.06 before I had to stop because my shoulder and neck got sore (and the barrel was taking to long to cool down). I think most people's problem with 30.06 is not holding the rifle correctly. I know that I could feel it when I didn't.

Also, I can happily recommend the Vortex Crossfire 3-9x40. It is a great scope for this rifle.

Now, I need to get a scope mount for the 20 guage barrel. Pretty soon I am going to need a rack for rifle/shotgun barrels. I have the spare 20guage barrel for the Rossi 22/20 guage my wife got me. The 20 guage barrel for my Handi. I'm trading for a second upper for my AR. And, I'm planning on getting a 223 barrel for my Handi.

Forgot to mention. the first thing I did was send my Handi reciever in to have a 20ga and .223 barrel fitted to the frame.  Still use the 20ga barrel for birds during the winter.
