What do I have here?
« on: September 25, 2009, 09:00:06 AM »
I bought a Model 158 topper 30 30 today. The serial number is AY4854**. Can anyone tell me anything about it? It's in decent shape and should shoot great.

The receiver is case hardened like a shotgun receiver so is it safe to put my 357 mag barrel(reamed to max) on it?
I tired just switching it out with the 357 max but it would fit in. The 30 30 win barrel that came with it fits right in but this one won't. Any idea?

Thanks!

Build year info can be found in the FAQs as well as barrel fitting info, the 158 originally came with 357mag barrels as well as 357MaX.

Tim,
So is the 30 30 barrel I received with it safe to shoot on the SB1 frame topper frame?

The 158 was offered in 30-30 also, H&R won't fit a 30-30 barrel to any SB1 frame, maybe they will some day, but not yet, the SB1 shotgun frame also has a larger firing pin which isn't the best for a rifle chambering, and being a bottlenecked round the 30-30 has more breech thrust, so it isn't like a straight walled round like the 357s and 44. The model 158 isn't on an SB1 frame, it was made before 1987 by the old H&R that went out of business in 1986. 30-30 pressure is also higher than the 357 and 44, 42kpsi compared to 36kpsi for the 44mag and 40kpsi for the Max, the 30-30 also has a larger case head than the Max at .422" compared to .379".

I've only had one M158 30-30, the barrel wouldn't come close to fitting any of the 30+ frames I had at the time, and none of my barrels would fit it either, I suspect the older frames had a big tolerance spec because some members have swapped barrels between old and new with no problems.

NO! NO! NO!  You've got it all wrong ::)  You keep the .30-30 and get a new frame and stock set for the .357.  What kind of a Handiholic are you growing up to be????

If you're serious about selling the Topper, PM me with how much you need to get for it.

Haha your right petemi! I guess for the $100 I have in it I might as well keep it! It's hard to find a good shooting rifle besides a Mosin for sub $100 these days.

Will all the stock sets fit this model? The rear stock is too short now because the first owner was an idiot and cut it. I took it off as the overall length of the rifle is a tad to short with it on... I don't want ATF knocking on my door!

A modern stock may or may not, I tried one on my 1972 M158, wouldn't work, the tang bolt was at a different angle and the stock didn't mate up with the frame at the right angle, but others have successfully swapped stocks, the only way to know is try it.  ;)

I've got an old topper 158 frame and any of my stocks suck right up to it.  It's as Tim says, ya gotta try it.  Get a pallet wood here, try it, if it doesn't work sell it again on these classifieds.  Not much to loose.  Better yet, keep it for that .357 and then all you'll need is a frame.
