New idea for a DIY barrel stub....?
« on: September 24, 2009, 04:18:19 PM »
Ok so we all have seen many of the different ways for the DIY'er to fit up a new stub and many vering ideas how to and also about the safety for some ideas.
So my question, as I have not yet done a "Custom Handi stub", what if..
1- You take a shotgun barrel for the stub,( I am thinking 20ga would probably be the best choice for the least amount of material to remove???)
2- Your specific chambered barrel of choice...)I am thinking about sticking to the lower pressure cartridges like our 357 ::))
3- A large enough Die and Tap set... (I realize it would be large..)
4- After working down the outside of the chamber end of the barrel to the exact size Dia.
5- You tap out the inside of the 20ga stub..
6- You thread the outside Dia. of the chambered barrel
7- You install a frontal barrel lug to correct the head space
8- You perhaps used JB Weld on the threads and tack weld around the Lug to ensure you have a permanent barrel...  ???

Again this is just an idea I have been throwing around in my head, and it's rough to say the least.
Larry what do you say? to make it a permanet solid barrel not legally a 'sawed off".
Could this work safely?

If I were to try it that way, I would probably find my self a 3/4 16 tap and die set.  That size is about right for a 20 gauge chamber.  Then you can buy off the shelf nuts to use.  You could probably get a barrel round enough on a belt sander to run a die over it, as long as it has some threads it will screw into the stub you would tap with the tap.  Put JB wled on the threads and tighten down the barrel nut to lock in the head space, then grind off all the metal that doesn't look like a barrel, fill the scratches with bondo and spray paint it stainless. Check my numbers, I think if you can find a barrel that is .750 it will work.  Larry

Thanks larry. I thought it sounded doable for when ever I get around to giving it a try ;)
I even think my Dad or Uncle has the tap and die set I need  8)

I thought about the same approach with a 20 ga double to make a double rifle. Sights, barrel supports and regulateing the barrels would add a whole new adventure to it. I have too many easy, proven projects going on and too little money to worry with it right now.
Good luck, eddie

Wow doing a double barrel this way would be risky....but cool if it worked out.
At least with a Handi if you screw up it doesn't hurt too much out of pocket.

Ya think Rem would ever make a double Handi?  It's be great for Canadians and Alaskans in say .338.

Rem imported the Baikal as the SPR22 for a while, but has since discontinued it.

Do a Google search for H&R Ultra 243 Winchester barrel stubbing project your idea appears sound.

Don't cut the chamber till you have the barrel permenently secured to the stub. That way you have better control over getting the headspace right when you cut the chamber.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Only Handi so far is a 375 JDJ.
