Savage 170 30/30
« on: September 23, 2009, 06:36:23 AM »
I have been looking around for a decent rifle this season that won't cost much.  I am a lefty, so my options are limited. I have called around the pawn shops and a man has a savage 170 pump in a 30-30.  Now that is not my preferred caliber, but I have heard great things about savage arms and a pump might be up my alley.  He's asking $375.  It comes with a mounted bushnell scope and sling.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

What caliber are you more interested in?  Does it have to be a Savage?  Savage made this gun in 35 remington, but they are harder to find.  Some say the 30-30 has some issues, but the one I had was fine.  Remington also makes some older pumps, the model 760 that could be had in 308 and others. Might end up about the same or close to the 170.  Have fun choosing.

The .30-30 is and has been for more than 100 years a fine deer killer. There is nothing at all wrong with it for deer hunting. Folks use a lot less suitable rounds to kill deer cleanly every year.

I'm sure not up on the going price on that rifle but to me it sounds a bit high priced. Pawn shops in general have darn little in the stuff they have for sale and most times will take a lot less than the asking price for stuff especially if they took it in on pawn or bought it outright for cash. I'd offer him $300 at most and wouldn't begin there but would start lower and try to negotiate the price to that level or pass on it if it were me. I'd hate to put more than $350 in it and might not as you should be able to get a used lever gun in .30-30 for $250.

Buy a handi you should be able to pick one up for less than that. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with that savage or the 30 30 caliber.

Three years ago, I got my next door neighbor to try deer hunting, and we found a pristine .30-30 Savage 170 locally for $175, which had a junk scope on it.

We trashed the scope and mounted the fiber-optic open sights my neighbor preferred - and he used tha Savage until this Spring, when he fell in lust with a .30-30 Marlin Glenfield at a gunshow for $210.

He sold the Savage, via walking around at another gunshow, for $225.

All this, in "spendy" Southern New England.

I would say your pawngun is waaay overpriced.

Pawnshops typically buy their goods for 10 cents on the dollar, so IMHO he has probably no more than $75-$100 in the rifle.

If you like it, I would speak to the pawnshop owner only, asnd lay $225 on the counter before asking him if you have a deal.

I agree, $375 is too much for that rifle
