permanent magnet toy motors

Do they still make these things? Are the battery powered pocket fans they sell at Wally-World permanent magnet types? If so they can be used as a generator, and I always wanted to put one on a mouse wheel. We'll be having mice coming in the garage pretty regular when it starts to get cooler; might as well make 'em work for their keep.

Most all DC motors are PM motors.

example of output:
Hard drive motor = max 5w output at 2000+ rpm
cordless drill motor = max 15-18w output at 2000+ rpm
treadmill motor = max 150-250w output at 2000+ rpm

If you really want to generate your own power and have a good source of wind or running water... a treadmill motor makes a real nice generator for charging a battery bank for inverters.

Nothing that serious here, just some sunday afternoon monkey-shine. I'm thinking of putting mice to work just to have an example of what can be done. Caught a bunch of them a few yrs. ago and had 'em shinnying up rods inside glass tubes, sliding down tubes and they were constantly on the wheels, inside and out. It was a regular circus. -I think I was layed off-  but now with some great-nephews they might get a kick out of seeing how simple it can be to make electricity. Never put a tach on the mouse wheels, but they spun fast enough to send the ones flying that tried to jump on!

I think you could light LED's easily with little motor out of a battery fan.  I would just hook two LED's, one in each polarity, across the motor, one or the other will light depending on the rotation of the motor.  (telling the mice which way to run could be the biggest problem).  Larry

I've wondered about LED's; also wondered about whether mice prefer a certain direction. They may not be right pawed or left pawed, but maybe clockwise and ccw. Or I could just dog the wheels to go one direction.

does not matter really. If you have DC motor and want to make sure that you always have the same polarity then all you need to do is run the output through a full wave bridge rectifier.

The attached schematic shows one way to do it.
