cool or dumb idea?
« on: September 20, 2009, 06:57:29 PM »
I just finished boring out my 12ga stub to put my 357 barrel into and had an idea. This is the same barrel from the $67 handy thread. The large part of the barrel out just short of the muzzel where I plan to install the front sight. I thought it would look kind of neet if I octagoned that little area of barrel. I then also thought about octagoning the stub, but it would make it very thin at the center of the flats. Then I thought about doing the flats half as wide and leaving an area as wide as a flat still round between each flat. has any one seen one like this, or what do you think about how it would look.
Thanks Don.

I have never seen one like that. You can do what ever you heart desires, but I would only do the top half of the stub, putting on three partial flats. As far as the barrel is concerned I would octagon the whole barrel making the flats just short of the stub and tapering them up to full barrel diameter just short of the stub and having the flats on the barrel line up with the partial flats on the stub. It would be unique :o Good Luck and Good Shooting

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure I could find the patience or skill to do the octagoning the whole length of the barrel as only have angle grinder, files, dremel and sand paper to work with. To do the straight areas of barrel is one thing, but to do the flats along the taper of barrel could be tricky. Also would have to look at how thin it would become as this is a relatively thin profile barrel. I am interested in what others think and possible things to look out for or how to ideas.
Thanks Don.

You had to bore your stub? I used a 3.5 inch 12 gage donor barrel and the 357 barrel fit very well in the factory chamber.

I only bored (dremeled) the area of taper and past to diameter of chamber. The barrel just fits in chamber, but taper on is too small. On the insert I am working on I ground down barrel to fit and am welding on a rim to headspace at shell rim cut out. I do like the looks of your finished project also.

I used 2 ton epoxy to hold in my stub and then put 4 tack welds around the front. I then gooped up around the front of the stub with JB weld and hollow ground it when dry with the drum sander on my dremel.
