different caliber than the .44 mag?
« on: September 18, 2009, 06:06:51 AM »
I just don't like shooting my .44 mag Contender. What would be another caliber that would be good for elk and black bear  that might be as good or better than the .44 mag??

Why do you not like the 44 Mag?
What barrel length are you looking for?
Are you looking for less kick?
Or just a differnt caliber to use.
Short barrels 6-10"
357 Mag / Max
45 Colt
45-70
Long barrels 12-14"
30-30
35 Remington
357 Mag / Max
45-70
375 JDJ??? Huge Cannon. I would not shoot Tad's  I also would not shoot the BFR in 450 marlin.
Something about both being just short in ballistics to the 375H&H and the 458 Win Mag out of hand guns that has me thinking I should just stick to my 44 or 30-30 barrels for big game.

Not knowing why you don't like shooting your 44MAG makes it hard to recommend something else.

It's real easy in a Contender to get something WAY better than the 44MAG for big game.

Contrary to popular belief, some of the "handcannons" are very manageable and not nasty to shoot at all, yet are pure death on the biggest game.   The 375JDJ is one of the best of all of them.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I would recommend a 45/70 with a muzzle break if you don't like the recoil of a 44 mag. The 45/70 just doesn't have the sharp recoil like a hunting load in a 44 mag. You do get a lot of push but its mostly directed back towards you. My experience is with a scoped 12" Hunter barrel shooting 300 grain bullets on a G2 frame.

Yes,  the 45/70 has pretty tame recoil here is proof.

The 45-70 video compares to my experience. Except I held the cannon a bit looser.Flew past my right ear.
Not going to that again. :o

If recoil is the reason you don't like the 44 Mag in a Contender, try putting on a Pachmayr grip and forend.  They add a LOT of weight.  I'm not a big fan of recoil, but with the Pachmayr set, the 10" 44 T/C isn't bad.

I put a Red Dot sight on the 14 inch barrel, and it hasn't been too bad, tho" I can feel it in my hand. Now I'm going to try the 10 inch barrel, with a Bushnell Trophy Red Dot sight and hope it works out, as the 14 in. barrel is more bulky than I like. and all my loads are fairly hot, as they were loaded for my .44 SRH.  I do have the Pachmayr rubber grip on it. One other thing, I'm shooting the older Contender. I have the new G2 that I bought before they sold the company. I've never shot the G2.  Is there any difference in felt recoil between the older models, and the G2? I appreciate all the replies
