.45 plinker
« on: September 17, 2009, 03:51:34 AM »
Picked up a .45 Colt Classic a few weeks ago and have been doing the usual tuning and tweeking. Almost have my hunting loads worked out but next would like to do some plinker loads, lower than cowboy loads, possibly even with round balls. Anyone have any favorites they have been successful with? Thanks

Any lead bullet with Trailboss powder is a nice plinking load.... Use the bottom load listed in thier data and you will be pleased.

I haven't tried too many different loads in my .45 Colt yet but the most accurate cowboy load I've shot is a 250 grain LFN over 7.0 grains of Unique. Very mild and pleasant shooting. The starting load of 6.4 grains of Unique was also decent.

What did you come up with for hunting loads? I'm going to try some hotter Unique loads at first and then try some other stuff that my local gun shop has. They have some Sierra 300 Gr. JSP that I'm tempted to try with some H4227 or Lil' Gun.
They also have some Hornady FTX and XTP bullets.

Hi double, the loads I'm working with now are 25-27 gr. of H110 and Beartooth 265gr. hardcast bullets with gc.These are .453 dia. as suggested. I'm getting around 1.25" groups at 50yds. as of now. These are fairly lively loads and I still have some adjustments to do. Still playing with AOL. and getting used to the gun/trigger in general.

+P loads of Lil'gun and 250gr Speer GDHP or 250gr SSTs get me just over 1900fps, 1½"-2" 100yd groups, the 200gr and 250gr FTX are made for the 460S&W and 450 Bushmaster respectively, but they should work fine at +P velocities in the 20" barrel, I get almost 2900fps with the 200gr factory FTX ammo in my 460S&W BC Carbine barrel, but accuracy is 2-3" at 100yds.

Thanks for the replies guys, my peep sight and front fire sight came in today so I'll be installing those then heading to the range tomorrow. Are you using magnum primers or standard with those loads?

WLP with Hodgdon 250gr XTP data for mine, I worked up to 1Gr over their Ruger/TC data due to being loaded to a longer COL, 1.673" for the Speer GDHP which is .010" off the lands, and 1.941" for the SST which is also .010" off. I use Hornady dies, their seater plug accommodates the pointy bullet, others may not.  :-\

The Lee seater die makes a mess out out of the SST / FTX pointy bullet. ;)
Don't ask how I know this... :P
