567 Yard Shot
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:59:47 PM »
Had a blind set up on the side of a mountain.  567 Yards corrected for a 22 deg angle, to the nearest gut pile.  Actual yardage was just over 600 yards.

First day:  2 Wolves came in and were checking the gut pile.  Used the Handi 30-06 and took a shot.  Missed.  Had four Bull Moose come out into the open after sundown.  Two little paddle heads, one about mid 30s, and one in the low 50s.  The bigger one was a shooter, but he never approached closer than 700 yards corrected.  Too far for the Handi.

Second day:  Early morning before sunrise saw one Bull over 60 inch, over 1000 yards, too far for our range finders to range.  Saw seven cows during the morning.  Saw one wolf way up the river on the bank, it never showed itself again.  Then right at sundown a Grizzly came walking up the river bank.  When it smelled the gut pile it turned and ran into the spruces.  It then circled around and came back out into the meadow way down wind.  It then went to the gut pile and started feeding.  I knew the Handi did not have the horse power for a Grizzly at that range, plus I had already missed a wolf at that range.  Picked up the Weatherby .338/378.  Settled down and took the shot.  Hit the bear right behind the shoulder, good lung shot.  Shot was a complete pass through, hitting both lungs.  Bear turned and started running.  Took a shot aiming at the spine as the bear ran away from my position.  Missed the spine by 2", but that shot made the Grizzly roll.  Grizzly sat up, I aimed at the neck.  Shot broke the neck, killing it instantly.

Need to go work on the Handi, should not have missed the wolf.  Have a new Burris scope 4X12X40.  I am thinking I need to practice more on using that scope, and reading the Ballistic Plex reticle, and assure the load meets the markings.  Shooting a new 200gr Nosler Partition loading.

As I hunt mostly squirrels in the back yard, I am simply blown away by what you hunt. Awesome. I assume that you set up some sort of reactive targets in the area of the gut pile and confirm your sight adjustments. I saw a grizzly in the zoo once.

I got one picture of the meadow from the digital camara, then the battery went dead.  Will post a picture of the hide and head if Al has not skinned the head by the time I get to town tomorrow.  The claws on the front feet are impressive, as are the teeth.  When I got it to the Tannery today, Al looked at the teeth and aged it as a seven year old sow.

One thing I have to say, with both lungs jellied from the first shot, she was able to cover 75 yards real fast.  If the shooter had been 100 yards from her, and she wanted to get to you, with only a frontal shot, YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN IN REAL TROUBLE.

In a valley like that, sighting shots would ruin your chances of seeing something.  The thing to do is know where your gun is going to shoot at that range, and having equipment that is compatible.

Doing some shooting today with the Handi, I think the problem is that the 200gr bullets are a bit too heavy for a 30-06.  Going back to the 180s or the 165s.  Was just looking for a bit more penetration.

Sourdough, You said a mouthful.  That is the key to successful hunting.

And here I thought you did it with the Handi  ;)

But seriously, that's good stuff, could you give some more info on your 338-378?  What are you shooting out of it?  Is it a factory gun?

Since the .338/378 is no a Handi, I'll post the stats on it on the Howa/Weatherby forum.  Scroll down next group of forums.  Rog
