How far do you actually shoot with your buffalo classic?
« on: September 16, 2009, 11:12:20 AM »
Just curious about how far you all shoot with Buffalo Classic rifles.  In particular I'd like to hear about 45-70's, but any caliber is welcome.  What sight setup do you like to use on your rifle for shooting at your farthest distances.

I've been using the sights that came with it - Williams I think.  And I'm not hitting well, due to my old eyes I suppose.  I think I'm going to try a Creedmore ladder.  I put one on my Marlin 1895 Cowboy and it made a WORLD of difference.

Oh, to answer your original question, not far - 100yds or less.  Partly because I can't tighten up pattern and partly because the range I use is only 100yds.

I've shot up to 800 yds. with BC 45-70 shooting a painted steel plate.  I have to "walk" it in to get the range and windage.  OK for target, but I wouldn't try a hunting shot over 200, based not on the gun's ability but mine.

I got out to 500 yards with my 38-55 BC and still have a lot of adjustment left more then the bullet can travel.
I installed a williams FP rear sight and a .404 front fiber optic red blade for the front sight.
I find a .080 peep works better then the factory peep that comes with the williams rear sight

Did you see John Boy's 1000yd thread in the FAQs? I've only shot out to 200yds, might shoot to 300yds someday.

I've read it before, but it's been awhile.  I didn't find it earlier when I was looking through the FAQ's earlier.  I'm going to read it again.

As far as I can see the small fuzzy mammal known as the groundhog.  I have a BC in 45-70 and in 45-120.  One has a Smith Enterprise ladder sight, the other has a Williams FP with the target knobs.

My uncle and I will take our big bore guns out to hill tops and walk shots in on chucks in the valleys and on the next hill side.  Anywhere from point blank shots to at least 900yrds, maybe more(range finder doesn't go that far).  My uncle uses a damn nice Browning Hi-Wall with upper level #2 loads.  I use mid level #2's to low level #3's in mine pushing some modified 300gr JHP's(bored out to 250-260gr then a hot glue spitzer put in the cavity to bring the ballistic coefficient up).  My farthest .458" chuck kill was about 550yrds +/-, my uncle's is about the same.

Control F and 1000 goes right to it in the FAQs, that's how I found it, or anything else I look for.  ;)

  • I enjoy long range shooting and big guns.

I've shot my 45-120 to 220 yards ONCE, on a silhouette chicken.  I hit it (amazed) and thought I better not impress the folks at the range anymore.  ;D

I can't do more than 100 yards with mine.  The gun is more than capable, but I'm not!
I've been planning to do something about the sights, but I haven't been shooting much and I've been lazy  ;D
