.410/45LC range report
« on: September 16, 2009, 07:24:29 AM »
Been wanting to try the ugly rem round nose lead bullets in a 45Lc case in this barrel and finally got a chance to today.  While I could consistently hit the 25yd 8in steel plate with the bead sight standing...the 25 yd accuracy on paper is still dismal at about 6 inches.  Terminal performace looks ideal in that the bullet completly mushroomed in the soft berm.  So maybe this barrel is a good 25-35 yd max combo with factory calibers IMHO....

With the bead front sight and the LOOOONG chamber, that might be as good as it gets.  With better sights and a longer case, I think they would work much better.  I have toyed with the idea of using 460 S&W cases and mount a scope.  Too many projects, so little time. :-[  DP

dp...I have had it scoped before and managed some cloverleaf groups at 50yds with 9.3x74r brass and heavy bullets but never tried how the setup was originally intended.  If this is a survival barrel I think woodsmanship best be near moutainman status...     ;)

9.3X74R brass?  Now there is one that might be hard to find local.  Did ya have to shorten or any thing else other than open the brass up?  DP

Yes...alot of trial and error.  VERY EASY TO HAVE TOO LONG AND RUPTURE A CASE.  That happened to me before I realized what was going on.  I had to keep trimming load a bullet check fit...and so on and so forth.  It would have saved me a lot of time by just doing a chamber cast.

The brass I remember paying about 25 bucks for 20.  HORNADY.

Look up posts by me with either 45/410 or 450 mongo.  Im going by memory but Im pretty sure I was in middle level45-70 loads(1700to1800fps with a resized 405gr lasercast.)  KEEP PRESSURES LOW.  Tim informed me it is a milder steel.  30-30 pressure levels are max I believe.  A whole lot of work to make it really shine...but it was fun at the time.
