35 whelen

Got a new handi in 35 whelen today with synthetic stocks today. This is my second handi. Already have a 45/70. How does the recoil compare to 45/70 with the wooden stocks and can the interchange. By the way this is my first post.

Welcome aboard. Shooting the 35 with syn. stock with no weight to me is about like shooting the 45/70 wood stock. Yes the stocks wiil interchange. I haven't got a chance to site my new one in yet but bought 2 boxes of hornady light magnum 200gr when I bought it. I shot a few rounds of the le's in my old one and they thump pretty good.

I never shot my whelen with the synthetic stocks but it kicks alot less than my wood stocked 45-70 with my handoads.  I didn't like the synthetic stock so I ordered wood replacements from Remington.  They fit perfectly but you will need a shorter stock bolt.

Yea I don't like the synthetic stocks much myself. Planning on replacing them later. Going to get a scope after I get married and finish remodeling the house.

I have a synthetic stock on my .17HMR (I know, I know it's not a Handi) and my 25-06.  I like them myself, the only drawback is that they are slick, and hard to handle, especially with gloves on.

But my favorite is the laminated stock on my Ultra .223.

The new synthetic stocks on the 35 Whelen are much nicer than old syn, the forend is very rigid and they're checkered with a much better recoil pad, I love them, don't care for the old syn stock much either.

Seven of my Handis are on the old synthetic stock.  I've never had any problems with them.  The .45-70 and the .30-06 have 36 ounces of #4 shot in cut off panty hose in the stock which greatly reduces recoil.  It's tight and doesn't rattle around.  I don't mind toting around the extra weight.  In fact, the weighted rifles are "Handier" to carry with more weight at the bottom they sling better.  Morning temperatures here during the summer range from 30 to 60 degrees, so we wear gloves most of the year.  I've never had an issue with that either.  The wood stocks on the other four are much slicker, especially with light jersey work gloves.

I just prefer wood I guess. Besides if I replace them with wood and keep the synthetics I get to find another handi or handi frame to put them on. Seems I buy a new handi everytime Ms changes their hunting laws anyway.
