What if question for you all....
« on: September 15, 2009, 02:49:33 PM »
If you where going to build a short handi-rifle (16" barrel, youth stocks or cut down adult stocks-13" LOP) what caliber, etc would you use?

Mainly just to have to say you have, but maybe a compact truck gun, or walk about gun...

 All opinions appreciated.

I have one in .357 Mag (now Max, sorry no pics) with a full length stock, but I might try it on my sporter weight 22 Mag. It is the little one (still 20"). Very handi :) There is black bear near me, but I never see them. Plenty of coyotes, rabbits, tree stumps, etc though.

I agree with Wreckhog, 357 Mag (Max).  It will take care of most anything.  If you stay in bear country perhaps 44 mag...

Here is a topic I started a few years back and got some excellent feedback. Perhaps it will benifit your question as well.

Plan B would be cut down a smoothbore 20 gauge to LEGAL length (not 16") and tap it for whatever sights you want. That would really cover a lot of game at short range depending on how it was loaded. I have a 20" Tamer with a full length buttstock. Fun gun.

I've got 22 inch Handis in .357 max and mag.  I'm thinking about cutting the mag down to 16 1/2 inches and putting a youth synthetic on it.  Then, If I like it enough, ream it to max also.  Same reason.....a Handi truck gun on the farm.  It'll wear a red dot mounted forward on the base, so length of pull won't be an issue.
