Thoughts on the H&R 243 Youth Rifle & Ammo...
« on: September 15, 2009, 06:28:38 AM »
I Just recently purchased a H&R 243 Youth Rifle for the heck of it... I've Never killed a deer although have been hunting a few times. The rife that I already own is a Remington 700 7mm Rem Mag, but was looking for something small & light weight. I've been told that a 243 is all you need really since I hunt in the woods and my shot range is 60 yards or less. I put a pretty big scope on it which maybe overkill but that's what I like in scope's, personal preference I guess... It's a Leapers 4-16x50 with a 3" sun shield. The Ammo that I bought for it is Winchester 243 100 gr. Power-Point... Mind you, I still need to shoot it to fine tune the scope, Just looking for some advanced knowledge... I'm ex military and have been around weapons, I still would like to hear from other hunters and there experiences...

100gr power points will work fine.

I'd stretch it out to a couple hundred yards if the op presented itself

Your scope choice is fine, I'd keep it on 4x for your 60yard shots, and your big objective will help at short range.

When you get to shooting SC gophers, then you can crank it up.
