Sighting in Handi....Where to put the rest?
« on: September 14, 2009, 03:41:02 PM »
In the next day or two I'm going to hit the range to sight in the .270 barrel I just acquired.  I know I have read that it is a good idea to put the front rest up against the trigger guard for optimum accuracy.  Here is my question:  Is this still recommended if in hunting situations I will most likely be resting the forend on something such as my knee, etc.?  Will the different pressure on the forend change the point of impact, or simply result in larger groups?

Best advice is shoot it to find out, what works on my rifle may not on yours.  ;)

The one constant with firearms accuracy is consistency. Consistency = Accuracy. Some firearm platforms are more forgiving then others. With the handi's two piece stock its more prone to changes associated with its for-end. So its quite likely you will see changes from where you rest the for-end. One thing that's for certain no matter what rifle you shoot. Do not rest the front on ANYTHING hard. It will recoil off that hard surface resulting in very inconsistent bullet placement.

I prefer to rest the front as close to the "hinge" as possible. This works best for me and my shooting.

Tim is also correct, what works for some doesn't for others. (BTW, this is also a result of inconsistency's in manufacture.)  ::) ;D

The bottom line is, try it a number of ways and YOU decide which works best for you.

Plus one on what CW said.  When I'm hunting, I put my hand just forward of the trigger guard and rest the rifle on it regardless of whether I have a rest or not.  Your hand, even on a hard surface will cushion the jump.
