Savage 24 chokes
« on: September 13, 2009, 03:23:00 PM »
Does anybody know why model 24C's have unchoked barrels?  Were they all unchoked?

I have noticed that not all of the other 24's are choked the same.

The one I had sure wasn't unchoked. It's been far too long to recall what the choke was but it knocked down squirrels and doves from way to far off to be no choke. I'm thinking it was either Mod or Full.

The C model (for Camper) was a really short barrel 22 over 20 guage. It came with a case that fit the gun when it was broken down. Mine didn't have a choke either. I don't know why, I would have thought that it would have rated at least an improved cylinder. I didn't keep mine long, I couldn't hit squat with it, but I blame that mostly on the short barrels. It definitely was not a smooth swinger.

Graybeard,
Did you have a 24C, or one of the longer barreled models?

Trotterleg,
You have a different model, probably a 28V.  The 24 C has short barrels, a straight-grip stock and a trap in the butt for ammunition.

Bilmac,
It wasn't the barrel length, but was probably because the barrels were not regulated properly.  My 24C barrels were way off.  I think that they just assembled the guns and didn't check for barrel regulation.

http://www.maxicon.com/guns/savage_24c.htm has a page from the 1980 Shooters Bible giving the choke specs.  It shows the 24C having a cylinder bore while the others have a full choke.

AFAIK, the 24C (Camper Model) had no choke because it was designed to be used in camping & survival-type situations - not hunting, per se.

Most other were bored/reamed with full chokes I believe, since I can't recall ever seeing any issued with the barrels marked for any other choke.

I just checked my three 24's:

24V                O.D.=0.735,  I.D.=0.593

24 Series S      O.D.=0.734,  I.D.=0.602

24J - DL          O.D.=0.835,  I.D.=0.587.  Yes, I doubled checked the O.D. and it is .835 dia.
