Bullets for H&R 45/70
« on: September 13, 2009, 12:24:26 PM »
I just bought a H&R buffalo classic 45/70 govt. New to reloading and looking to reload both smokeless and black powder Could someone help with bullet diameter for this gun ? I see about 5 different sizes. Thanks for the help . By the way the first 5 shoots fit in a half dollar great gun.
is there anyplace that sells bullets in small amounts to try?

You'll probably find .459" and .460" cast bullets shoot well, but slug the bore to see what the bore actually measures, bore slugging and chamber casting is covered in the FAQs, you want to order bullets that are .001"-.002" larger than the groove diameter.

300gr Hornady HP's have worked well in both of our Handi 45-70's.  Both shot over 41gr of Reloder 7.  Worked well in a friend's Handi as well.  My son has dropped a few nice deer with that load, none going more than a few yards. One was right at 195lbs and only went 10 yards.  I'll be trying some cast, unsized 340gr and 293gr bullets as soon as I get a chance.  I'll post the results when I do.

For jacketed, I've shot 300gr Nosler Partitions, 300gr TSX-FB, 350gr Hornday RN and 405gr Rems, all shoot excellent in everything I've shot them in, BC, Handi or SS Ultra Hunter.

gendoc,
you mentioned a load using IMR4227 which is a pistol powder and you load 45/70 Govt. with it?
Just wanted to be sure.

One of my favorite is a 405 grn. hollow base from a Lee mold, loaded over Blackhorn 209.  With  this black sub. you can use traditional smokeless lubes.  Very accurate for just plinkin'.  For serious work I'm sold on the Rem core locs.

                                                      FYI

Hornady#7 lists IMR 4227 in their Trapdoor level loads with the 300 gr bullet to a max of  33.7 gr for 1800 fps out of a  29 1/2 " barrel ! They do not show that powder in Lever or Ruger #1 pressure levels.

Sierra#5  lists IMR 4227 for Marlin Level to 44.6 gr for 2000fps from a 22" barrel.

Nosler#5 lists IMR 4227 max loads at 47.5 gr for Strong Actions( 35,000CUP )  for 2146 fps from a 22" barrel
