45-70 shakari?

Hey folks.  I saw a handi in a shop yesterday.  It is has a wooden stock and forend, something like a cleaning rod under the barrel, has a barrel band, stamped 45-70 shakari,and has open sights   It is clean, no rust, just wondering what it is and is $219 a good price?   Jeff in San Antonio.

The Shikari was made by the old H&R that went bankrupt in 1986, it was offered in 44mag and 45-70, maybe 357mag, they have cast iron frames limiting loads to trapdoor levels, I've passed them up at $200, but I'd give $125 or so for one, one man's junk is another man's treasure, just depends on how much you want one and what you want to do with it.   They're good shooters with cast bullets, but so are modern 45-70 Handis with properly sized bullets.  ;)

Around here you can't touch them for less than $500. Collectors mentality I guess. I have seen them go at auction for as much as $700. I would love to see one for $200.

Just curious - did the ramrod, or cleaning rod, serve any functional purpose, or was it just kind of a doo-dad?

The Gunbroker Shikari wreckhog referred to had a starting bid of $249.99 and got no bids, looks like a fairly nice one too.

Thanks for the replies. I will probably pass on this one.  I will wait for a newer model so I can shoot some higher pressure rounds.

It is a brass cleaning rod that is tapped to take standard claening assecories. I would gladly pay $200.00 for one. But I have deep emotional/sentimental family history reasons.

I've got one.  Love it.  I just respect the pressure limitations of the cast frame and silver soldered barrel lug.  It has killed a dozen or so deer for me, all with cast bullets or 300 gr Hornady HP's.  All were loaded at trapdoor level.

I have one.  I LOVE it and shoot it with "Trapdoor" loads using Black Powder.  It shoots GREAT!!!  Loves cast bullets, easy to clean with Black Powder.  VERY accurate.  I plan to hunt with it.  Jim.

I have one too... A very well balanced 45-70 to carry.  The minimalist wood makes for a very nice carry gun.  Trapdoor level is enough recoil for me...

I have one I've owned for 30 years. I replaced the hard rubber butt plate with a thick recoil pad and put finer sights on it. Other than that I've just shot it for years. As others have said, it shoots great and likes cast 405 grain bullets. If I EVER found another one for $200 I'd jump on it!
