New Handi - unexpected find
« on: September 12, 2009, 12:37:59 PM »
Stopped at Gander Mountain a couple days ago just to look around.  Usually don't buy much there except for occasional sale items.
While looking over the gun racks I spotted a synthetic stocked Handi with open sights.  Sticker said .44 mag for $249 (new).  Price seemed okay, not great but reasonable.  I saw the serial prefix was HX so I figured there was a good chance the bore wouldn't be oversize like the older ones.

I thought it would be an SB1, but when I opened it up I could see it had a small firing pin and the inside of the receiver appeared to have a smooth finish - an SB2!  Been looking around for a while for either a .30/30 or a cheap used SB2 in any caliber that I could get a .357 barrel on (and ream to Max) and haven't run across any at the right price.
Anyway, I brought this one home.  Will make a nice heavy cover deer rifle.

Got it cleaned up and just shot it a few times in the backyard so far.  When I took it apart I confirmed it is an SB2 - frame matches the pictures in the FAQ's (great info there!!).

Have to work up a load and decide what scope to put on it, probably either a Weaver K3 or a Simmons 2X shotgun scope, but not sure yet.

Will try to post some pics after I get it put together and report on how it shoots.

Congratulations Spruce, and be sure to add it to the count that GrandpaMike is keeping in this thread about how many H&R's are owned by the members here. That thread is in this same forum, "Centerfire Rifles". I think yours will be either # 899 or #900 of complete H&R/NEF's!!!....<><....:)

count as of 09/02/09 per GranpaMike:

115 Handi-holics.

875 Complete Guns.

152 Extra Barrels.

I want to be added to the count I have a .308 that was at first a survivor. It came home a Survivor and then became a Ultimate Hunter, the only difference is a Ultimate Hunter has what they call a semi bull barrell mine has a full bull. Now with a full bull and a laminate stock it looks at a glance the absolute same as my buddies .308 U H. The laminate stock is courtesy of the classifieds here at GBO I can't remember the members name at the moment.
