500 SW loading help
« on: September 12, 2009, 04:26:11 AM »
I have a Handi in 500 SW.  I want to load 350 grain bullets between 1400-1500 fps with the powders I have on hand - IMR 4227, 3031, SR4759, & Trail Boss.  I think the SR4759 should be great for this but I can not find any load data anywhere.  I have tried up to 14 grains Trail Boss but the velocity is still too low and the case is full.

Can anyone give me some recommendations using the powders I have listed? Especially 4759.

Thanks

I think your best bet for the powders you have listed is gonna be the 4227 I will let you go to the IMR site for grain but probly start around 28 or so. Kurt

I'd look at the 4227 data in Taffin's article in the FAQs and go from there.  ;)

Thanks guys, I just read the article and 4227 will get me where I need to be.

The main reason I like 4759 is that it does not require any crimp to burn clean and be very accurate in 45-70 and other straight wall cases.  When I shoot 4227 in straight wall cases it seems to need a crimp to burn clean at the lower velocities that I like.  If you have never tried 4759 you are cheating yourself from a great experience.

I do not have a chrono, but after firing factory Hornady 300 grain ammo I fired my handload and just heard a click and thought there was a misfire!!  I took off my ear muffs and tried again and the report was pretty quiet (comparatively) with no recoil and noticeable drop at 100 yards.  The rounds were clean and accurate but seemed way under powered.

Thanks Kurt, I did see that before.  But that is data from a pistol barrel.  starting load at 1675 from a pistol barrel, what would it be from a 22" barrel??  I like to plink at 1400-1500 or so.  I think your first number of 28 grains might be closer to the velocity I want from a 22" barrel.  Only problem then is the un burnt powder if I don't crimp.
