Is recoil going to hurt?
« on: September 11, 2009, 04:25:08 PM »
Last week I had my back cut open and some lumbar vertebrae fused.  Does this mean an end to my big-bore fun?  Does anybody else have fused vertebrae and shoot 45-70?  Man, I'd hate to have to get rid of my BC.

I've had cervical discs fused 14 years ago.  Have been shooting everything since about 6 mos. after surgery.  I am now recovering from shoulder surgery, (7th wk.)I'm shooting left handed this year, but expect to be back to normal in about 6 mos. from this as well.  Give it time, it will heal....don't push it. I've shot up to and including 458.

Have never had back issues, but severely damaged my shoulder a while back. Was not able to shoot hardly anything for a while. Am shooting full power loads now, but arthuritis is starting to set in.  It's not as fun as it could be.  While I was recovering, I found an article on the internet about 45-70 guard loads. Basicaly a light round ball load. They will keep your Buffalo Classic, and your big bore fun going. going

Chas, I am no Doctor or any of such...I was a Personal Trainer for 5 years and know a little, but for what it's worth, and that means I am under no such guidelines to diagnos your personal issues... (sorry it's under the 1st rule for a PT) I would say depending on the severity of the surgery, it just depends. I would ask the doc and then go from there. My close friend just went through back surgery but he is able to bow hunt... so again I would ask the doc.. certain disks undergo more pressure than others depending on the activity.

Everyone is different and can and do handle recoil differently.
While I don't have any fused I do at the present time have two disc broke in my lower back and have severe rotator cuff (or whatever it is called) problems in my right (shooting) shoulder.
At times they both hurt like heck but has not stopped me from shooting any of my big bores or the 3" mag 12 gauges.

No real advice to you about your problem, but hope you are back on your feet real soon!

One word for you: PAST
I got one of their recoil pads last year- wish I had one years ago! I can shoot 45-130 (300 grain bullet) loads all day comfortably with one, my 7mag feels like a 30-30 with the pad on. The only drawback is that you might get scoped if you have short eye relief.

The best recoil reduction we can get is recomended for any shooters approaching 50 years old. The membranes in our eyes thin as we get older and are more prone to tear and detachment. When 3 1/2 mag shotguns came out there was a rash or those problems for a spell. eddie

I have two vertebra that are fused together in my mid/lower(right at the lumbar and thoracic curve meeting point) back from a motorcycle wreck back when I was 18.  They only bother me when I do some incorrect or excessive lifting.   Recoil never bothered my back, shoulder is another story though. lol  I think a couple times my 45-70 and 45-120 has put a couple back "in". lol

I can imagine if the you have 2 or more fused in your neck or upper back it could be an issue.
