7-08 is a shooter!
« on: September 10, 2009, 12:04:32 PM »
I received this gun a couple of weeks ago.  You know how it is with a new gun, you gotta shoot it!  I tried popping a few rounds in the back yard, but that just didn't cut it.  So I finally got to the range today.  I had several reloads, but she seemed to prefer the old core locks to the fancy bonded bullets I tried.  When I had used up my 140 gr bullets, I tried some 120 gr Ballistic Tips.  Bingo!  It does like these and shoots them well!  This final target show the results with one called flyer that was my fault.  I'm less worried now because I can't seem to get stocked up on basic 140 gr core locks (Hornady or Remington) because everyone seems to be out of them at this time.  No worry, I can just shoot the 120 gr BT's instead.  This gun looks like a keeper!  44 Man

Sounds like a winner!  Looks like you will keep that 7-08. Good Luck Marv.

The little 7mm is a great little cartridge, glad ya got one and enjoy it.  I've only put 30-35 rounds through my 7mm-08 Handi, but she liked my loads of 139 Hornady and IMR 4350.  DP

That data is correct from Hodgdon for the BT.  The Speer manual shows 46 to 50 gr of H4350 with their very short, flat bottomed 120 gr spitzer.  They set it deeper (2.70 COL) but still not as deep as the BT will be at 2.80, so after digging through several manuals, I decided to try 46 gr first.  The load seems to work great, I may try one or two more grains, but since this load is fast enought for the bullet to work as intended, and is accurate, I'm fine with that.  Nosler says the BT works from 1600 fps up to 3100 fps.  I don't see an advantage to push it to the top velocity.  While I have not chrono'd this load, it should be close to 2800 fps and that is fine for me.  Another bit more velocity might allow for a little bit less bullet drop at 300/400 yds, but my personal shooting limit is 200/250 yards anyway.  These 'old eyes' just don't sort it out well beyond that limit.  44 Man
This gun also shoots the 140 gr core locks within 1/2" of the BT's at this velocity.  I like that.
