Shim material
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:03:00 AM »
I need further testing to confirm...but I sold a reciever I had fitted to a 357mag barrel and was left with a shimming project.  Started looking around for aluminum shim stock but was all out.  Had a roll of heavy pink teflon tape sittting on the work bench from a pipe job a month ago..Lol...and had a thought.  I placed a lenght over my receivers pin and checked fit.  Snug but not how I like it.  Tried another strip over the last and I couldnt close it up.  Put the whole thing in padded vise and got it to lock up.  Opened it closed it...it locked up nice.  Took to the range today and it shot good and stayed tight.  I've got some load development to do on this barrel so it should get a good workout.  I'll repost if it holds up or not.  I would doubt it would hold on the higher pressure calibers though.  Very easy shim if it holds!

I was hoping not to offend you Richard,...I do now have a fresh supply of shimming material.  In fact I took an empty one with me to the range today in case the tape didn't hold.  Should have probably taken empty coke can instead.  Hate to get pulled over for open, empty container.  Be hard to splain to a non-handiholic man of the law.

The problem with the gap is that it is caused by the soft underlug.
Any material used for filling the gap (shims) should at least be as hard as the underlying material, e.i. the underlug. The life of the
shim or whatever depends on the pressure the rifle produces.
With low pressure cartrides the repair will last longer.

I have fixed my custom 257 Roberts twice before and the repair last about no more than 100 rounds. It needs fixing again.

This time I will mill off the foreward part of the underlug up to the back end of the forward pin. This pin is not needed to remove the ejector spring. The removed part of the underlug is replaced with a hard piece of steel that is welded in place. This new piece of material is welded to the barrel on both sides and the front and up and across the underlug.

The hinge pin is pushed out and a new seat is milled trough the
hinge pin hole with a suitable end mill while the barrel is held tight against the standing breech.

This I hope will fix the gap problem permanently.

Tim you show us how it is done with your nice shop mill. Me I don't know when I am going t do it.

Fred I read your posts.  It was interesting and I used a similar method with good results.  It is not expected to be a permenent fix.  I remember watching a repair on guns and ammo or another similar show and they removed the hinge pin put the barrel together on the frame , held it in place with a padded vise, and used a repair kit that came with a tapered file and matching tapered pin.  They used the round file to make a new radius with the frame and barrel lug at the same time.  The pin was then inserted with a good amount of pressure, and then cut and filed flat with the frame.  Looked like a nice kit, but I've never found one.  It was an old shotgun repair so I do not know if the same pin would be used for SB2.
