I aren't even in the market for a new barrel yet, but the recent postings about how bad a situation you can get into is too much for this newbie.

If by some miracle, they get their act together and everyone posting is raving about how got it has gotten, without weird stories, then maybe I would consider it in the future.

What about trading barrels on GBO?

How much success do folks have regarding fit up when buying barrels from other members?

Even if you had to fit them up according to the FAQs, it's got to be a lot less risky than sending the frame away, especially if it is your only one?

Educate me please...

Ive trade a bunch. The most "fitting" Ive had to do is a bit of filing on the latch shelf. Im talking just a few swipes. & once A barrel was a bit loose, One layer of aluminum foil shim was all it needed.
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

+1 on what burntmuch said.  Had one I shimmed and another I touched up the latch shelf.  Of the eleven H&Rs I own, only one is a factory complete rifle, the rest came in parts out of this forum.  I did order 3 barrels from the factory, but they're now on their own unmatched frames.

I do not have any fitted barrels, mine are all factory fitted. I have 2 frames with 3 barrels each. I think most of the horror stories come from folks that send in their frames with what they want with out first calling to verify barrel availability. Unfortunately, I do not think the CS people in NY have as much knowledge as the CS people did in Massachusetts. When I say that I mean they do not really know well what is available, or they maybe available, but sell out before your frame comes up to be fitted. I think in Mass. they were physically closer to the barrel supply so they knew for sure what was available. So the first thing is to call to make sure the barrel is available and find out if they have very many left in stock. You may have to wait a few months to get your desired barrel (s), especially the more popular ones. They make runs, not continuous production on barrels. I got my 357 barrel this way. I really wanted a 44 Mag barrel, but they were out, so I substituted the 357 barrel for it, which was available. Once you are satisfied they have the barrel you want then record the serial number, package your frame up very well and send it in with your money order or credit card information. You might also ask how long a wait can be expected when you have CS on the phone so that you know what to expect. Be patient with them, they deal with hundreds of calls a week and being nasty will not help your situation. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar and you will get better and more accurate information, when you keep your cool. Of course we hear about the folks that have had bad experiences, when you are upset, you want to spout of about it, because you are pissed off. There is nothing to shout out when you get what you want in a timely manner. Tim follows this much closer than I do and knows at least one person at NY, I am sure he can really give you the straight scoop on getting accessory barrels. Good Luck and Good Shooting

LaOtto 222, I agree but I think I've read more than one story about calling in and it not helping. As you said I don't think one hand knows what the other really has. You may have been lucky that they didn't have the 44 as you wouldn't have had the good fortune to get the 357.

I'm sure fitting yourself is fine for some but I would like to get new barrels fitted from the factory. I will wait a while and probably pay more when they think they are doing such a good job they can raise the price.

I swapped the barrels/frames on my new 44mag and 223 the other night and there is a very slight wobble and I don't want to have to worry about THAT when I pull the trigger. I'd rather have patience now than have to develop it while the factory has my frame for a year!!! Lets go fire off a couple rounds ;D

I have handled a few new rifles and noticed I could have done a better fitting job than the factory.  Factory "fitted" means only messed with once.  I would hope any member trading or selling would avise the OP if a lug has been altered from original state.  Thats all I see good about factory fitting. I have a BC frame with a factory barrel that fits much much better on my Ultra frame....???  So what I'm trying to say is have faith in yourself and search the classifieds on a daily routine to find what you are looking for.  Probably save a few dollars and weeks too!

Just from what I've been reading, I feel that unless you have plenty of time and a backup firearm and not in a hurry to get your gun back, then you may be alright to send it in to be fitted.

It just seems there is more "horror stories" where even factory fitted barrels are sloppily fit, and then there are the ones where it takes months, and then only after several calls talking to people who don't have any idea where your gun is, that concerns me.

Some have posted complaints and been rediculed for how they didn't do this, or do that, before sending the gun in to be fitted, but that is just making excuses for CS who should by now be on top of it, and able to be more efficient in filling the orders in a timely manner, or at least giving more information as to delays.

They are definately not helping their image!

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

How much success do folks have regarding fit up when buying barrels from other members?

I've had less than 50% sucess with them fitting even with 2 receivers.  All have been quite loose.

80 percent of barrels/receivers are close. Real close. Of course if your only setup is off, then you are in trouble with 80% of what you buy. I have 10+ receivers. Most barrels interchange or very close. I also have 3 used barrels bought here. 2 fit multiple receivers, 1 rifle barrel fits nothing except an SB1. I have never done any sort of fitting. If it don't fit, I set it on the side. Only had to do this once, with that aforementioned rifle barrel. I assume that as I procure Handis, it will fit something eventually.

I have only had one barrel that would not fit one of my frames and I did buy a new Handi that turned out to take that barrel.
As you can see from my avatar that I am like Tim (Quicktoodo) in I have plenty of frames to try.
So far all have fit one of my frames without having to do any work.
Admittly, some could use a little truing up but none are bad enought to worry about.
Mine are hunting guns not target guns so I can live with 1.5" or 2" at 100yds.
Severial of my small bores will do under a dime with factory ammo and no work what so ever.
The larger groups are from the big bores.
