Handi Hornet rechamber to " K Hornet "
« on: September 09, 2009, 10:29:55 AM »
I have a question about depth gauges and the rimmed Hornet case.  Do you need gauges when reaming to the improved K Hornet or can I mark the rim area of the chamber with a ink marker and keep checking depth?  I would think that once the reamer just contacts  the ink marked rim the target depth has been met.

Thanks, Eddie

I just measured(caliper & micrometer) and marked the reamer when I did a K-hornet, a 357mag to 357max, and a 45-70 to 45-120.  :D  I didn't use marker/ink because it didn't provide a sharp enough contact/measurement line, and it smeared once it some milling oil on it.  I use masking tap, the edge of which being the depth marker - just have to make sure its concentric around the reamer.

Thats the beauty to rimmed chamberings, most of the time you can do it without go/no-go gauges if you are patient and stop when you just touch the rim recess(then a couple no pressure turns to clean up).

When I did a 357 to Max I just ran it in until it just kissed the existing rim, but did not cut it. You can do it ;)

This Handi Hornet is my low budget rifle.  Picked this 80-85% condition rifle up for $100. at the last Gun Show. 8)  Then found a used Mueller APV, and two boxes of free Remington 45gr. Hornet ammo.  So now I have a K Hornet reamer coming from 4-D Products and a set of RCBS K Hornet dies.  With a 1 : 9"  twist barrel I cant wait to try some 69gr Sierra bullets.  ;D    Handi Rifles are so much fun!!

From a fellow 22 Hornet owner, you will enjoy it!

Good luck and have some fun, and we need a range report and pics.

Mine hasn't been reamed yet, but they are a hoot.  Great for someone not used to shooting.  DP
